Happy Fourth of July, for those who live in the United States.

For everyone, the following is a tribute to all who died in a war anywhere, whether they were on a battlefield or not. It is based on a true story.

He had been happy once
With optimistic eyes
And plans
Which led him
To a war and comrades
And days spent
Sweating and hot,
Searching for
Death, leashed

Until the day
he spent picking
Up pieces of
His sergeant
As he might have
The torn pieces
Of the letter
In his pocket.

Hey, Walker. Thanks for reading. I read the story in the newspaper a few weeks ago. It told of a young man who had served in Iraq. While there most of his unit had died, along with his sergeant, whose body he had helped recover as it was in pieces. It was the worst day of his life. When he came back he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, but he did not seek treatment from the army, and he recently committed suicide.

Happy Fourth to you, too. You do live in the Americas anyway.

Wow, it is a sad story. To have fight in a war and live to tell it must indeed change your life. Thanks for posting this here.
Indeed I do live in the Americas
