Midnight Sun

Rate this Entry
Ahh the land of the "Midnight Sun". LOL. I haven't seen the sun in the last 9 days. Close proximity to Arctic Ocean and the meltwater from Winter's snows has resulted in a fog that has been around for several of the days, and doesn't burn off. The days that there is no fog are the sun is blocked by low lying clouds. There have been some unusual pseudo sunsets as the sun approaches the horizon within 20 degrees or so.

Then the temperature fluctuations around freezing lead to good driving in the morning (when I get off), and poor driving in the evening (you guessed it when I come on). The workplace is called a pad (site for several wells), and it is a swamp churned up by the frequent passings of mud trucks, end loaders, and 4x4 pick up trucks.

The snow is slowly ablating and the tundra is revealing its secrets daily.

I'm having flashbacks to digging trenches in springtime in North Dakota for the melting snow to drain away from SAC's missiles. Keep your chukka boots dry and your parka tight.

Take pictures and post them, please! I want to see what you see. I'm sorry about the fog and low lying clouds. I get severely depressed in the absence of sunny rays - I hope you don't.
I can't imagine how driving in the morning when it's freezing makes for "good driving" however. I can't stand going outside when its cold!

I will be taking some pictures in a while, and probably post them seasonally(I had some great pics from the winter, but lost the disposable camera somewhere). As for driving...the mud freezes in the evening hours, because although the sun is up there is still a variation in the sun's rays. Frozen mud is a good solid substance. Mud in general is a mess, and the vehicles can and do get stuck bogging down in it. Then you have to take a hammer to the frozen mud accumulation to keep it from wearing on the tires in the tire wells.

How warm does it get up there mid-summer?

It might get up to the upper 60's for a week, mostly in the 50's
