Wonders Never Cease

I cannot believe I am going to read an Ian McEwan book!
I know it is quite bad of me to judge a book based upon a movie, but the truth is that if I see a movie based on a book and I find the movie completely uninspiring and uninteresting it does not exactly make me want to go out and get the book.
So I was suckered into seeing Atonement because Kira Knightly is my girl, and in spite of her, I found the movie to be quite god awful and well if she wasn't in it, than it is the kind of thing I normally would never have thought to go and see.
But however unfair it may be, after that movie I swore I would stay away from anything by Ian McEwan.
Well my and my mother have very different taste in books, while I do now and again read things just for pure entertainment value, and for the most part I have a very eclectic reading taste, I don't consider myself a book snob, it is also true that I like a lot of "artsy" books or things that may be a bit more high brow, and classics and such. While my mom primarily reads true crime, and commercialized serial fiction, John Grisham and that sort of thing.
Whenever I rave on about some book I just read that I thought was fabulous my mom will always get tempted into reading it and then just be like "what is this?"
Well she happened to pick up a Ian McEwan book without recognizing the author (as her feelings about Atonement were the same as my own) she just happened to read something about the book which made her think it would be interesting but after reading the book she was like why the heck did I think I wanted to read this?
So she was telling me about the book and said that I should read it because it sounded like the sort of thing I would like and I asked her who the author was and when she told me his name I was like oh that is the Atonement guy, but I agreed to take a look at the book. At the very least I know if my mother is suggesting it to me, it cannot have any semblance of romance, because she knows how I feel about that.
