The History of Love

For one of my classes I have to read this book called The History of Love, and there is just something about it, that I cannot really nail down how I feel about it.
I cannot honestly say that I hate the book though more and more I find it a chore to have to read rather than looking forward to doing so. While it is not truly boring pre sea it does not draw me in or captivate me, or really capture my interest all that much.
It seems like the kind of story that I should enjoy because it is unusual and unique, and has a touch of the surreal or bazaar to it, but there is something about it, it just seems to be lacking something so it leaves a taste of blah in my mouth.
I cannot fully wrap my head around it, I have tried to compel myself to like it but there is just something bland about the way the author writes to me. I cannot really put into specific words just what it is about that is the repelling factor.
The story and the characters seem like they should be interesting, and yet somehow they just aren't and I can't quite figure out why. And I do not think it is really flat out bad writing, the author has some nice prose, but perhaps she just lacks a certain umph, a certain flare.
The other thing, I am not squeamish or prudish. I generally like books that are really nitty gritty and have a certain raw reality to them but she just does not quite pull it off so it just ends up sounding crude without being clever about it.
