Thought on the Beach

Rate this Entry
Silently the sea rolls softly on the sand,
Gently carressing small wet shells that shine in the light.
Not far out i can see a ferry heading towards Land
And watch as the gulls on the rocks take flight.
I lift my camera and take some shots of Howth
To the north, Dublin and Wicklow to the South...
And i sit, putting my camera down, shrug off my coat
And let the warn sun touch my skin, a smile shapes my mouth.
The sand feels soft and gentle on my fingers as I
Dig my nails in. I close my eyes, listening
To waves crashing, other people on the beach, birds in the sky...
I open my eyes and look at the water, the heavenly sun glissening
Silver on the waves... and i wonder what it would be like to share
The feeling of tranquility beside someone to love, someone to care...

Oh Niamh. You paint such a lovely picture here (I adore the alliteration in the first line - it really reels you in)... the sea always takes me to a land far away, one that wavers between the real and the fantastic- and there, you know, we're laid bare. The sea has this affect on me too - to make me realize just how... how much I want to share those seemingly simple scenes with someone. Two people, trapped in that same feeling, gazing out in the same direction. You'll find that someone, Niamh. Just around the corner, when you least expect it- and I have a feeling it will be absolutely magical.

    Thank you, Niamh. Lovely, indeed.

You know, I never really understood why people like the beach so much. Of course, I'm not much of a swimmer. Actually, my biggest fear is drowning. So, yeah, I'm not a beach person. It makes for some good metaphors, though...

Oh, and I went to Myrtle Beach for spring break and my God! there were too many buildings. How is one supposed to truly enjoy the beach with those looming edifices?

It's not the beach. xD It's the OCEAN. Well.. and wriggling your toes into the sand, and finding seashells... you should have gone to Huntington Beach State Park. It's private and reeeally nice - all wildlife, good hiking trails. Jetties to nearly kill yourself on. f you walk down far enough you could have reached Castle Atalaya! The buildings do get a bit tiring, so you have to be sneaky. xD

    Thanks.
Hey Dori? you should try get to a beach that is surrounded by nothing but sea to the front and grassy dunes to the back, and no building in site.
Its not about being on the beach. I could have been anywhere. Its about the peace and wondering what it would be like to sit surrounded by beauty and to share it with someone. (as wisp pointed out earlier)

Very lovely Niamh. You know if there is a local newspaper or magazine that publishes poems they might just take this one for the local background. Consider sending it to one. I love how you worked the alliteration. So subtle that one doesn't even realize it, the lovely "s" sounds. One phrase that I felt was awkward was "a smile shapes my mouth." You might want to rethink that one. Just my opinion. Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed it.

yeah that kinda bugs me... but i'm not one for chopping and changing poems. they generally stay the way they originally land on paper. I'm always afraid i'll lose the feeling of the poem.
