Mother's Day

I visited my mum for Mother's Day today, it was a lunch with the whole extended family, fish and chips down at the foreshore. The predicted weather didn't come to the party, instead it was overcast and the temperature was cool enough for me to wear a light jumper (which means nothing because I have a cold phobia).
My sister has been keeping her pregnancy a secret until she'd passed the three month mark. She had caved and told our grandparents earlier that morning and it seems grandma couldn't let it stay a secret. Grandma said mid-conversation
"Well, are you going to tell them the news?"
My sister laughed and blushed, trying to pretend the news was the new car she'd bought, with her husband, yesterday. Over a few uncomfortable moments and giggles the family were let in on the secret. Nobody jumped for joy at the announcement, because of my sister's obvious embarrassment and their confusion over whether it was a joke or not. The awkward moment eventually passed and the conversation moved to easier topics. I felt awful for my sister, where were the happy congratulations? It shouldn't matter that it came out badly.
An aunty and uncle arrived late, mum and grandma pressed my sister to tell them the news. Amongst the "Tell them" and "YOU tell them!" her husband blurted out
"She's up the duff!"
It actually got a positive response and broke some of the earlier tension. My cousin and I took the dogs for a walk later and laughed over the incident. She commented that my sister looked embarrassed, I told her it's probably because there's concrete evidence, in front of the whole family, that they've been having sex.
Present giving time came and among grandma's gifts was a new tennis raquet. Grandma had only accepted this present after being told that I was going to be taking up tennis again and would use her old raquet, which to her was still perfectly fine. I hadn't been told about this white lie and was presented with a tennis raquet while being questioned about where and when I was going to play. Needless to say I was a bit confused until I was taken aside and told why I was being given a tennis raquet I would probably never use. My sister and I gave my mum some new ugg boots, which we give her just about every year, because that is all she ever asks for. Mum gave me the gold ribbon from the wrapping to take home for the cats to play with. I playfully wrapped the bow around around my neck and forgot about it, then wondered why people were giving me odd looks as I walked the dogs with my cousin.
The sun had come out and was warm on our backs when we decided it was time to go home. I hugged and kissed all of my family goodbye, straightened the bow around my neck and slung my tennis raquet over my shoulder then got into my car for the long drive home.
