Being a Momma's Boy

Rate this Entry
Well, I'm back up in Alaska again. I had 3 weeks off. The entire time was spent cleaning up my dearly departed maternal grandparents house. My grandmother died Easter of 2006, and my mother is the executor of the estate. Both her parents went through the depression era and couldn't throw anything away. This is a pet peeve of mine, personally. My mother growing up in this environment has the same habit. While it was thrifty in my grandparents it borders ridiculous with my mother.

The entire three weeks were spent at my grandmother's hauling 57 years worth of broken pieces of wood, piping, tubing, broken hand tools, broken electrical tools, hand made volt/iohm meters, electrical wiring, electrical equipment and jars of mismatched nails, screws, bolts and tacks. Then we tossed the old mattresses for 8 beds, and cleaned out the attic and garage.

I was forced to call my brother to help me move the washer and dryer out to the truck to recycle them. He was irate that I had to ask him for help and grumbled the entire 8 minutes of work. Anyways, numerous trips to the dump and then I was given the pleasure of cleaning the house. It was really supposed to be done by my mother and four of her siblings and their spouses, but they get to reminiscing.

I knew it was going to go like that. I had made some plans to go watch the Milwaukee Brewers play several home games. My plans were related to the aunts and uncles, and my plans are scrapped to accomadate my cousin I'm now taking along, whom I'm apparently supposed to find a job for. Don't ask! Anyways, I basically spent the entire time being a Momma's Boy. You know its bad when you just can't wait to go back to work.

My parent's grew up during the Depression era, so I can totally relate to them hoarding stuff...especially my mother. I find I have picked up some of that, I tend to be a packrat and I hate it. Sounds like a very unpleasant 3 weeks.

Ah family bulwark of support and happy harmony. I can relate--I often hide at work or go early to escape home (at least when the boys were teens).

Hoarding - my thoughts exactly, Kathy! Although to be fair, hoarding is now a legitimiate mental, er, disorder (something to that effect) that is associated with senile dementia. I've seen some really horrible examples. Bless your soul for doing what you did - I know some people who had to move a hoarder's collection: it's no easy task and often you discover some really grotesque things.
And it's OKAY to be a momma's boy. My son is a momma's boy (although I have no clue why).

This entry only proves that you are truly a salt-of-the-earth kinda guy! That was good of you to do what needed doing, no matter what your own thoughts were on the subject. And by the way, your comment
grumbled the entire 8 minutes of work
made me laugh out loud. You really tell it like it is, love it.
