The Nation of the Glorious Turnip

The Canada Experience pt.1

Rate this Entry
As some may know, the king of Mars went on a field trip to Canada for a few months. These are the impressions of this trip.

I still remember the first things someone said to me when I arrived in Winnipeg: "Sorry" Why he said this to me is still a mystery to me, but I didn't really care. I was in Canada! I had finally arrived. Air Canada was friendly enough not to crash and the next few days I would be able to see some of the wilderness that is Manitoba. First though was the exploration of the only settlement of note in Manitoba, Winnipeg. This lovely little city was quite nice at the time of year, Warm, welcoming and the buddy that picked me up at the airport showed me a nice place to have Burger that was way too big for me.

Me at the University Entrance, I just walked up and stomped on the pretty little flowers. (well not really)

When I finally arrived at the Campus I found it quite friendly, just like the license plates. Although at the time of my arrival it was still somewhat deserted I was also informed that in about a week, it would be packed with students EVERYWHERE! But for now I had time to settle in and make a list of things I still needed, as I couldn't bring everything I needed with me.

It was in these days that I met a lot of the other exchange students, most of them from earth nations. Like I was too officially from an earthly nation to mask my true identity. The various cultures quickly started to interact and find that they were different and the same in many ways. The wilderness however beckoned.

It is the wild!

The first day that I went into the wilderness was an integration trip to a destination deep in the woods. Somewhere with a lake and trees. I hadn't seen trees and water like that in ages, as Mars is quite devoid of both in any natural way. Taking many pictures of the wild, I even managed to take a picture of an animal roaming the same woods as the International students. This 'deer' was friendly enough to pose for the camera before calmly walking off. I was disappointed that I didn't bring my giant miniature pocketknife(tm) as I could have used it to make a duplicate for the Martian Zoo of Earthly Animals. Better luck next time the picture would have to do.

Friendly animals in Manitoba.

After this amazing trip I was happy to be back into civilization so I could have few beers with the new friends I met, before going to bed for the fourth time in Canada!

Those are great pictures Aimus. Ah, so you were an exchange student. What are you studying? Whenever I look at a map of North America, there is this incredible stretch of land in Canada that looks so interesting. It just goes forever toward the North Pole. I've always wondered what it would be like to just keep driving north. And Canada still has wolves in their forests. That is so cool. Looking forward to more.

Welcome to our Great White North! To be honest, I've never been to Manitoba myself, but I'm glad you're enjoying your visit so far (I'm from Ontario, myself). How long is your exchange, Aimus?

Oh, and to be well versed in our charming culture:
This band is from Winnepeg and they're awesome

Beautiful land there in Canadia, yes!
I guess that animal was protected in a national park, right? Otherwise, if Virgil was that close he would have leapt forward in a four-legged frenzy of wolvish snarling and ripping, and brought it back for his dinner.

LOL Silas! Yes I would have.

Now I HAVE been to Winnipeg where I obtained a healthy respect for the right of way of the city buses. Was there actually a number of times in the late 70s/early 80s and found it the CLEANEST city I was ever in. Many happy memories there--mostly because the one of the earliest comic shops is (still?) there where I saw for the one and only time a copy of a real Batman #1 under glass and selling for a sum I'll never have. Glad you had a good time there.

    (....A real Batman #1?)

Just cuz you're handsome gives you no right to go tromping on helpless flowers, your highness.

Oh my goodness, how I absolutely envy you. I started to tear up staring at that landscape/cloudscape in pic #2. I want to get lost out there. You know, I honestly don't think I've ever seen a place like that in my whole life? In a whole 21 years of living? I feel only half-a-Wisp now.

    Friendly animal! Hullo!

You should come to New Zealand too! We've got lots of scenery like that here.

Yeas, New Zealand does have a lot of scenary. You can drive for an hour and the landscape competely changes before your eyes.

Classic, Aims was there before christmas. He's been beck since but too many things going on back on mars for him to let us know of his trip.

Winnipeg is amazing. I'm surprised you found it warm, though, as it is notorious for being freezing well into May.

Niamh - Definitely worth the trip. Canada is amazing!

Sophia - Yes, Manitoba is nice, but the rockies are even better, Although I didn't get a chance to go there myself, I did see a huge amount of pictures from some friends that did go there.

Virgil - I'm doing a BBA in International Business and Finance almost done.

Classic - It was only 4 months, one semester which really isn't nearly long enough. Was quite said to go back, but that feeling fades. Now I'm just travelling through Europe. Sweden here I come.

Silas - I do belief it was a national park, but the deer wasn't helpless, it had mosquito's and flies to protect him...
And yeah, New Zealand is another country on my list to visit ever since I saw all the behind the scenes from the LOTR films.

Mtpspur - I think they're still using the same buses as they did when you were there. Lot's of old technology there, other than that, it was pretty much clean yeah. I dunno about that comic shop, but they do have a church of Scientology downtown. Almost the same ey?

Wisp: Pretty sweet ey? I have a few more pictures of the natural surroundings of Manitoba, I could upload them if you're interested.

Becca - It wasn't freezing when I took these pictures, which is way back in August and September last year, around 30 degrees celcius.

To Little Wisp--that was a copy of an original Batman #1 from 1940 as opposed to reprints of it or other spin off titles. Have yet to see his first ever appearance Detective 27 though I have seen ALL of the major Marvel titles over the years. Doug Silupa's Comic World if memory serves. Haven't seen him in years though I'm aware he has a shop in Florida also.

You're all so friendly, it's really refreshing. Shame I don't visit more often, but, the time is now, and I'm alive. Besides, I'm not getting any younger!
