Halls of the Dark Muse

The Unasked Question

The Unasked Question

There was something you
wanted to know that
distant dreary day

A question held
within your eyes
yet your lips remained
silent

Left to fret
upon the occasion
never did you become
unhinged and speak

I dreaded what
you would say
while my mind
flew through the pages
of the book of my life

Seeking for lies and gaps
while anticipating
your inquiry, but never
it came, you held it back

I dreaded more
being denied knowing
while stumbling
for answers

Now it hovers
forever between us
I never brought myself
to ask what you held back

So I am left
quietly tormented
for never knowing
while I should relish
that now you can never
deem to ask

But where once single
question would have
freed me, I only see
in your no longer thinking
eyes, a thousand inquires
piercing me.

Muse, this is a beautifully sad poem! It made me think of a walk with someone on a cold, misty day.
