The Cold Waiting Season

Writing more than usual

Rate this Entry
ok, here i am. blogging for the first time. wishing to be a better writer and to have more time to write.
it is funny how many times i leave aside my school books to write something that comes to my mind. i should write it down before i forget it! lol. i used to set a time for write everynight before bed time but now i'm just writing all the time! there is so much going on my mind. am i in some other writing level? i hope so lol.

the warm weather here is driving me crazy; i want it to end so bad! i hate the sweat and the sticky (if that word exist) feeling during noon. fortunately we'll be visiting cuenca soon. Cuenca is simply wonderful. a city between mountains with history and tradition. I'm so proud to have born there.
i cannot believe that friends at north america are actually surrounded in snow!

Cuenca? How you you pronounce that and where is it? In my pathetic (lack of) knowledge of things far away, I don't believe I've ever heard of it.

lol. you pronounce it ku (like in cuckoo)-en (like in lend without the 'l' and 'd')-ka(like in california) cu-en-ca. it is spanish so vowels have a single sound. it is not like english sounds.
Cuenca is in Ecuador which is in Latin America along the pacific ocean. It is indeed a beautifl town with a lot of histoy in itself. You should check it out online.
I had meet some people that had come for vacations and decided to come and live here cool hu?

That is Cuenca's cathedral down town

Wow! I just did a quick bit of reading on it, and it sounds amazing! I've never been anywhere with a history longer than a few hundred years, and that kind of culture amazes me. I looked up some pictures, and as beautiful as they were, I'm sure they don't do any justice for the live experience.
Are you visiting it for something particular, like a festival, or just to visit and stay a while?

actually i'm from Cuenca. I grew up there but I dont live there anymore. I moved 3 years ago to a coastal city 6 hours away from Cuenca. Still I'm very proud of my home city It is beautiful indeed. what about you? where are you from?
  6. skib's Avatar
Awesome! It looks like an amazing place to be from. How come you moved?
I was born in Colorado and spent all of my childhood here. When I was younger, I spent a lot of my time in the Rocky Mountains, running around on my own doing my own thing. Now I move from state to state looking for jobs, because all the stuff I like to do is seasonal.

ok, now I'm more curious of what do you do. Here in Ecuador we dont have seasons, you know? We have regions-cold, hot and humids-
My family and I moved for my Dad's work. We began a christian church here. It was more hard than it looked like hehehe.
So, to keep with this thread *chuckle*, what do you like to do? I love to travel, is it fun for you?

No seasons? huh. Well, my preferable type of work is ranching- I'm not particular. As long as its got four hooves, I'll work with it. With the recent economy, the ranching industry has been hit very hard, so I went to the dude ranch type of job, where all I have to do is act the part of a cowboy (which is second nature for me) and I actually make a lot more money than I do with normal ranching. Since it gets so cold here, in the winter most of the dude ranches shut down, so I drive from Colorado up to South Dakota and I work at a pheasant hunting lodge, driving hunters around and whatnot. It's a good lifestyle, but it makes it a little scary for this time of year when money starts running low, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love to travel, and not being tied down to a regular job allows me to go wherever I want, whenever I want.
That's awesome that your dad started his own church! Was it only your family that started it, or a group of people that wanted to start it? That would be quite a bit of work for one family, for sure!
Well, when I'm not working I tend to get very lazy! I am a learning mechanic, and I love tearing into cars and trucks, seeing how they work. I like to fix things, and it doesn't matter what. I work with wood, especially on a wood lathe making bowls and other round things. I am an avid shooter. My guns are what define who I am, and I love to go out in our pasture and shoot skeet (like hunting birds, but with clay targets) and I like to shoot my rifles. I like to be outside, but during the winter it's hard to make myself find something to do out in the cold, so I stay inside and write! I love to write. It is my way of dealing with life's troubles.
    *big breath!* Enough about me!
What about you? What do you do in your spare time? Are you in school? What was it like growing up in Ecuador?

oh my! a cowboy, we don’t have of those around here hehhe.
I know how the economy is affecting every body. Here in Ecuador is not too harsh yet, they said that it'll affect us next year.
I like the idea to travel wherever you want, whenever you want. I cannot say the same hehe thought i travel as most as i can. Normally i volunteer like translator for american medical brigades held around the country so I enjoy a lot with them.(i love english)
I'm impressed with your shooting abilities. I've never even held a gun lol. the only thing i shoot is a camera! I like to dismantle things but i dont do it too often cauze mmm i'm not good putting them back together hahahha so i'm not good fixing them.
Growing up in Ecuador is pretty calm and easy (I guess). The life here is full of traditions. We have familiar parties for every holiday in the year. So I grew up having typical celebrations, with typical foods and music at grandparents’ houses or great grandparents’ country houses. But it is quite different now since we moved. Cuenca is more traditional than where I live now.
Yeah it was hard to begin a church. But the people made it easier; they are so open to us.
I’m homeschooling; I’m on my senior year. I love to write as well. It Is a need I have.
What kind of stuff do you write? Poetry? Prose? I guess I haven’t read any of your stuff yet…
(these are the longest comments ever! )

You're a translator?? WHOA! thats awesome! So, english must not be your first language? (forgive the stupid question!) That's cool, that you get to travel like that! At least out of most of the people I know, you couldn't get hardly any of them to do anything like that.
Do you like to take a lot of pictures? (I'll forgive you for the gun thing- they're expensive!) I've always loved good photography. I took a few classes back in middle school, but I just don't have the eye for seeing a good picture. Now what with all the computer stuff involved . . . it just isn't my cup of tea.
Yes, there were a good many things I took apart that never got put back together! That is the most challenging part of it. But, that is why I love it. It challenges the mind to think in different ways.
Do you have any traditions that originated in Ecuador? I didn't grow up with many traditions except the ones you just listed- going to my grandparents house on Christmas and whatnot. Do you go back to Cuenca, or stay where you live on the coast? You must still have great grandparents still alive? I never met my great grandparents.
So, in your schooling, are you getting anxious to be done, or is it something you enjoy and wish you could continue? And do you have plans for after you graduate? What subjects do you study?
Well, I write whatever I can. I have trouble with everything, any more. I used to write effortlessly, like the words just kept flowing from my brain and filling page after page. I guess my favorite things to write are short stories- I have a lot of experiences floating around in my head, and every once in a while I get the inspiration to write one down, and those usually come out pretty well. But when I have writers block, I tend to write little snippets of things, like they would belong to a larger piece of work. Either that or I just spew all the thoughts and feelings I am having at the moment. I have a few novels I like to work on every once in a while, but those are poorly planned and won't probably ever see the light of day! I guess I write whatever the occasion call for. It may be a poem, it may be a short article on an experience I had, or it may be a twenty page story!
What do you like to write? (I like that short piece you wrote in your blog description at the top of the page, by the way!)

hehe yeah I speak spanish in my daily life. I love english, I express myself better in english (it is crazy i know hehehe)
Well, I dont consider myself as a great photographer but some of my friends have liked my pics. You would have to judge them by yourself. But yeah I love pics so much.
I may have a good eye for pictures but definitely as much as I try I wont see the other way that something can be assembled.
Yes we have some original traditions. One that americans love is Carnaval. I'm not sure what we celebrate exactly (hehehe) but everyone has 4 days off of work, grandmothers and mothers prepare special sweet and pork but the main point of the holyday is to get wet someone else. We fill water ballons and throw them to each other. You can get wet in the street too if someone throws water at you. You'll find few people who'll get mad (of course you respect older people-but not your parents or siblings )
schooling??? are you kidding me? man, I want it to end so bad!! I can't wait for college, I want to study something I like and want. In the best of the cases I'll go to Cuenca for college but itsn't sure yet. Basically rigth now my subjects are English, algebra, CHEMISTRY! but still there are other ones I need to start.
I like to write just as you-whatever comes to my mind that can be related to my life as the short piece at the top of the page (thanks for the comment by the way, it is the first i got ) I want to try to write a short story but I dont know where to begin. Maybe a kids story...dont know. But mostly I write prose in a vain attempt for poetry. I can't never get it through maybe because english is not my first lenguage...
I would like to read some of your stories, are they available here on Lit Net? hope so

I see! You're one of those smart types. Algebra and chemistry? ICKY! I tried to take those kinds of classes, but decided that slacking was a lot easier. What other subjects do you still have to start on?
Your English is very good, especially for it not being your first language! Did you learn it as you grew up, or did you learn Spanish first, then pick it up later? Different languages were difficult for me. I tried Spanish, then German, and then decided that English was hard enough!
Four days off work? What time of year is it? The only two we get off work (and sometimes not!) are Thanksgiving and Christmas. I guess you could throw New Years in there too, but I've always considered them kind of the same thing.
So, you just throw water balloons at people? Food and water balloons. That sounds like my kind of celebration! Is it just completely random, or is there a specific time of day that you try to get someone else wet?
I guess everybody is ready to get out of school, especially when they're as close to being done as you are. I don't get the impression that you are one to slack off, but I can say from experience: DON'T!! I had to scramble in the last few weeks of my senior year to get things done.
I'm still relatively new here, but here are a few links of things I've written. I'll see if I can't dig up some others too. Have you posted many things?

The last one is a piece I wrote in a writing class I took in high school. That is why it feels kind of incomplete.

You made me laugh *big smile*. I'll have to start with physics, and trigonometry...I can't wait hehehe.
Thank you, you're very kind to say my english is good. Actually I learned english when I started homeschool 5 years ago. All my school books are in english. It was hard at the beginnig but no more.
We have a lot of days off work for holidays, it is ridiculous. I'm sure you would enjoy Carnaval, a lot! hehehe. You're able to throw water to people any time of the day. People understand it's because of the season and most of them walk scared in the streets expecting to get wet! (it is terrible if you work in a office and have to walk downtown on highhills!)
Thank you again for the advice. I'll try not to slack off. It is helpful to hear that. I will keep that 'DON'T' in my mind
You have given me a lot to read! That's cool. I can't wait to read them, then I'll tell you what I think...
I haven't post many things yet..actually I havent post nothing consistent. Don't worry I'll do it soon...
