Atma

Rate this Entry
Something I wrote a few days ago.

Atma is the center of and the source of the universe. It is all-inclusive, beyond form or duality. Infinite, it is ungraspable. The source, it is inevitable, eternal, and all-attracting. All except for Atma is illusion. All which the ego accepts or rejects is insubstantial. The individualized ego itself has no validity or substance, as it does not know Atma, but spends all its energy on the outer world. By association, the ego believes itself to be gross consciousness, subtle consciousness, or mental consciousness. All of these are a delusion. In the awakened state, Atman knows itself as Atman, and not as anything else.

I think you've nailed the central thesis of the Aurobindo project---the approach of the Life Divine being incremental and requiring a patience and intuition of rediscovery, the end point at which we attain union with the absolute. What I find fascinating, and perhaps you've picked up on it, is, is how he stretches Christianity until it snaps, literally, and what's left is stardust. There's a cosmic christ to be found in The Life Divine.

This makes me think of Aurobindo's refuge---his ashram. Created in the 60s, the top section is the meditation room. Natural light enters with a crystal ball in the center, allowing for descent of supermind.

Auronbido almost made me give up words completely. He said everything so well...It is very hard to say anything about him. He is very good! His work, "The Life Divine," is suprerior to almost anything else I've ever read.

Aurobindo died in 1950, and The Mother continued his work until she died more than 20 years later. I've really enjoyed Aurobindo's poetry and essays and books. That is really all I know about him, and a bit about his life.

Nik, yep, that's the one I was referring to, the one The Mother built. I forget what they call it.

Oh, legend has it that Aurobindo's body did not start to show any signs of decomposition until the 8th or 10th day, and up to that time his body smelled like incense.
