Sipping the Tea

Everytime You Walk Out Without Paying, A Waitress Dies.

No, not really. But close.

I gab so much when I leave comments that you all probably know that I'm a waitress by now.

Right, well -

Walk-outs. I don't know why there have been so many recently. It's either they walk out, or leave an absolute mess and no tip. The no tip bit I could grit my teeth over and live with -

The walking out without paying part, however, absolutely ruins EVERYONE'S night.

Say, for instance, the manager is in a bad mood. The DM (and I don't mean Dungeon Master) is coming next week and things aren't perfect.

Someone walks out.

Now one waitress is not only flustered beyond repair for the night, but the manager gets snarly to every other worker because it's the straw that breaks the camel's back.

(I work at a place, by the way, where you give them the ticket, then they go to the cash stand to check out.)

If you can't pay - don't go out to eat. I can't monitor, and neither can cashiers or hostesses, every single person that walks in and out of that door. Maybe it's a bad idea to have this set-up - but it's not the servers' fault that it's like that, and yet they're going to be the ones who get in trouble for it, even if they have three full four-tops and a party-of-eight.

This doesn't happen to just me - recently, it's happened to a lot of servers. It happens every now and then to servers in general.

I'm not getting on to ya'll, I'm ranting at the world of inconsiderates who would rather get a server in trouble than "stoop low enough" to buy some chicken noodle soup for an evening. (Personally, I love chicken noodle soup.)

(The worst part is, the people who walked out on ME tonight gave me a tip and were very nice. I don't get it.)

Anyway, sorry! That whole business just ruined my evening.

Ah, tips. I have worked at two places in the last year that the majority of our pay comes from tips. The first place wasn't so bad because there was a minimum gratuity of 15 percent, but the second place there was no minimum gratuity. We would work hard every day to please our hunters, wait on them hand and foot, and at the end of the trip, some would leave without tipping.
I hear you loud and clear, Wisp. It is quite frustrating.

That's awful! It's incomprehensible sometimes how rotten people can be. Did you have to give up your tip?

Skib, we can fume togethah!!! :O Yea, what I earn hourly is **** - generally, however, like tonight, I can make a killing. But there are some days when it just doesn't get it... I guess that's the chance you take as a server. :/

Higley! No, I didn't have to give up my tip. At some places, it's not uncommon that a server has to pay, but my restaurant is actually pretty understanding (there's only so much they can do to us due to the set up of the restaurant.) I would have, but I mean, I had to go grocery shopping.. and.. agh, life.

Some people can be SO rotten, but they are CERTAINLY the minority. One of my regulars came in today and we just had an absolute blast together. I did well tonight - the customers were SO much fun!

That is horrible Wisp. Such a lack of decency. I can't believe they are starving. There are places to go if they are.

I dunno. :/ I don't understand it, Virgil! The walk-outs certainly don't LOOK like they're starving. Ah well...

Wisp, I hate people that dine and dash. Although Ive never been a waiter. I still hate it. And people that dont tip are rediculous.
I remember late night trips to ihop where the waitress would always have to put up with us. But we would always have fun with them and they loved us. We used to give tips in the form of money houses. (like card houses). Oh, gosh fun times.

I would never walk out without paying, but how I tip is directly related to the service I recieive. I do not feel obligated to tip, it has to be earned. Though there have been few rare occasions when I felt it nesscary not to tip at all. I do not fear to give a low tip if I feel that is all the waiter deserves based on how well they did thier job.

LOL, Kevin, those are the customers I love!! The ones I can joke around with, and who joke back! They make everyone's life a little easier. You HAVE to come to my restaurant (if I'm still there) if you go to NC! You can have all the sweet tea you want there, dear.

Oh, certainly, Dark Muse! Even before I began serving my Dad taught me that. If a server gives customer poor service and the server complains that they only received a DOLLAR tip - welp, that's what the customer believed they earned.

There are some servers that I myself have not wanted to tip - but I do, however. The thing is, no - some people should not be serving for a living, but ... they are. And now that I'm a waitress I see that tips are the dough that the servers bring home the bread with. And sometimes people just have bad days. Our rule at our restaurant however is to leave the baggage at home. Come in with a smile. So I always give at least 15 percent - I'm a sap, what can I say. We all have our own ways!
