Halls of the Dark Muse

Bazarov

I am currently read Fathers and Sons right now, and well I am nearly done with it. It is a good book but I absolutely cannot stand Bazarov.

I just want to wring his arrogant, pompous, spoiled, whinny, full of himself little neck.

He is completely insufferable.

First he thinks he is Mr. Superior and that he is the only one who knows anything and looks down on everyone and thinks everyone else are all idiots. And anyone who does not agree with him is stupid and wrong because his opinion is the only one that matters and could possibly be right.

Then he falls in love and has to throw a tantrum and sulk like a little boy (waaa waaaa)

He is just a spoiled brat because his parents worship him and he treats them like crap.

And he tries to go after the girl of his supposed friend's father. That is just low. That is completely unforgivable and absolutely loathsome.

I wish Arkady would just haul off and slug him across the face and break his jaw and literally kick him out of his house.

Hahaha, it's a great novel. I didn't care for Bazarov either for all the same reasons you gave.

Bazarov was the archetypal but not the complete Nihilist in Turgenev's eyes, as he is a little heretical in his attitude to 'the woman problem' as it was known as (see Cherneshevky's: What is to be Done?). Later in the novel 'Devils' Dostoyevsky makes fun of Turgenev with the character of Karmazinov.

Bazarov is essentially a personification of what Turgenev thought of the entire Nihilist movement, in my opinion.
