Moshpit

Rate this Entry
the crowd is calm
an ocean of black before the stage
thousands of hands
raised up towards the heavans
steel strings
drumheads tightened to breaking point
the music blasts out
the masses explode
running and jumping
the sharp sound
of elbows cracking against eachother
the dull thump
of bodies smashing together to the beat of the bass
noses are broken and jaws are cracked
the crowd as a single organism
moving and thinking as one
bruises and blood
a quiet break
from the touchable world
the middle of chaos
is where the crowd lives on

I decided to write this while I was bleeding and smashing into people last night at a concert.
And I realized something. A moshpit is the only place where you can punch someone right in the face, and its totally acceptable.
I once saw a kid get knocked out cold. 2 people had to drag him out. And after the concert I was talking to him about if he was ok. And he said "I'm fine man. I went into the pit, what should I expect? You gotta expect to get hurt if your goin in there."
Its where we go to release anger. And it works.

I (somewhat) disagree that even anger is completely acceptable in the moshpit. While yes, it is a release, and that is acceptable, to flip out, to be angry, to hurt, there is a fine code of conduct in place: pick up anybody who falls, especially a girl (unless it's a Chelsea girl...), don't shove unreasonably or obnoxiously, back off when you're told, etc. Of course, this works both ways: if you're in the mosh and you don't want to get shoved, get the hell out. But don't go and break somebody's nose on purpose... accidents happen.

Out of curiosity- what show were you at? xD

I completely understand that. My level of anger in a pit really depends on the band playing, and how physical people are being. The standard rules still apply: if someone gets hurt, pull them out. If someone falls down, pick them up. This concert happened to be metal. Crow is their name. http://www.battleofthebands.com/cont...ge_search=crow

The pit was pretty intense and I did get punched a few times. But everyone was doing it so I really didnt care. I played lacrosse for 3 years so I dont mind getting hit pretty hard.
And the girl I was there with shoves harder than I do in a pit. Which is always awesome to see.

Ugh, girls at CoF in huge industrial boots, moshing, and stomping on my tender little feet and fallen fingers. Ouchies

Thats never fun. I just like that there are girls out there that arent afraid to hit some people.

The only moshpit I found myself into was at the NIN concert, and I got the hell out of it pronto, needless to say...

I didn't get hit, but I knew that if I succumbed to the bodies pushing and pushing, and fell -- I'd not be able to get up and thus be trampled. So yeah, I chickened out and grooved from the side. Oh the goings on in that pit, though...
