The Human Masquerade

The Human Masquerade

I put on this human mask
and dress in these human clothes
walk the streets indistinct
cloaked within this ruse

Deception is the key
to altering perception
they only see what it pleases
the senses of the mind to accept

Only a faint suggestion
is required for the eye
and brain to fill in the rest

They will never guess
an imposter falsely wears their skin
mocking their speech
with dead smiles

So use to being fake
that fraud can pass unnoticed
feeble and easy to mislead
passing by without a clue

The ironic twist is
that those who begin
to suspect are rejected by the rest

They do not like to hear truth
and prefer false compliments
over genuine insults
always needing to believe
that are actually of some worth

They rather everyone
pretend to be nice
than sincerely despise
wearing smiles of plaster
and say how do you do

Speak of useless things
rather then let a grain
of what you're really thinking slip out

Yes, it is easy to parade
as one of them, just conceal
every honest, genuine, sincere thought
that may enter your head
instead protect their delicate egos

But it is far more amusing
to shatter their self-imposed visions
and watch them topple and fall
among their delusions.
