Book Clubs

I use to always be against Book Club type book discussions, and when I say against I do not mean that I generally think they are a bad thing. But for me personally they never really worked because I did not like the idea of having someone else dictate to me what I am going to read and how much time I have to read it.

Though since I got involved in the Faulkner discussion of Light in August I discovered that it can be useful if I choose to partake only in book discussions that happen to be talking about a book I already own because it helps me get more reading done and gets me to start reading books I have had sitting around but have not gotten around to reading yet because I have so many other things to read.

I was over on the Goodreads site and well I haven't popped into any of the groups I belong to over there in ages because I have had so many other things going on, but I was sitting here with nothing else to do so I thought I would pop in and one of the groups I belong to has monthly discussions and for March they are doing the Handmaidens Tale which I happen to own and want to read, and the discussion did not start tell the end of March and so I did the calculations and figured I only had to read about two chapters a day to finish in time and I thought that sounded doable so I figured I would give it a try.

I'm not sure I would care about the face to face book club groups, though I have to admit I've never participated in one. I don't know how one is capable of discussing a book off the cuff. It takes me time to think about points and reflect on the book and go back and such. But the online book forum here is great!! No pressure to speak at the moment. One can go back and think something through before one says anything. And it's not just a one time meeting. We spend a month or so or more if necessary to talk through a work. Nice blog D-M.

Yes, the thing I like about online book clubs is I can do just what I like to do, choose to only particpaite in ones that are discussing a book I already happen to own and that gives me the opperutnity and motivation to finally read the book.

I love my book club here Muse. It always amazes me that ten people (the size of my group) can all read the same book and get something completely different from it. I always manage to take something away from the discussion that I never thought of.
