During the early part of this week my husband and I had an office visit with the Orphan Doctor. This doctor is a Pediatrician who specializes in international adoption medicine. If you want to read more about this amazing doctor you can visit her website at www.orphandoctor.com
Anyway, the reason we went to see her is because we may need to be vaccinated against certain diseases when we travel overseas and to find out what we should be looking for when we finally meet our forever child. She drew blood on both of us, 4 vials from my husband and 5 vials from me. We go back in 2 weeks to find out what shots we need to have. Some of you may be wondering if we are not set to travel until September, why do we need the shots now. We need them now because depending on which shots we need, some consist of a series of shots and we need to build up our immunity. No big deal considering what we are getting in return!
Once we receive our letter to travel we will go back to the doctor and she will fill us in as to what to look for when we meet our child. She will provide us with charts and such that we will use to compare to the child. We will be taking pictures and video of the child and send back to her for her review. She will then give us feedback based on what she sees. What she will not do is tell us whether we should adopt this particular child or not. Instead she will give us a risk assessment: average, mild, moderate or extreme. It will then be up to my husband and me to decide if we should go ahead and adopt that particular child.
Now that we saw the doctor that’s one more item I can cross off our TO DO LIST.
Next entry will talk about where we are with paperwork and the future of child's bedroom.
