Told My Mom

Rate this Entry
On Valentine’s day, my husband and I told my mother that we are adopting. I thought this was the perfect day to tell her since it was her birthday. The days leading up to it, I was trying to figure out the best way to tell her. I decided I would buy her a Valentine’s day card for a Grandma by her grandchild.

I wrote inside the card the following: Dear Grandma, we haven’t met yet but I am sure you will be a great grandma. Love your future granddaughter or grandson.
Her first reaction was, what a cute card, all smiling, then she read what I wrote and her face turned to utter confusion and getting a little teary eyed. My husband then told her we were adopting. Her face could have lit up the room !!!!. OHHHHHHHHH that is great !!!! I am so happy for the both of you!!!!.

We told her everything at that point. I explained to her that is why I haven’t been myself once in a while. She then said, “well that explains it all” because I was going to talk to you about your behavior.

I knew once we told her that she would want to start shopping but she knows she can’t because we don’t know gender and age of child until we travel to country. I told her I will need help in getting the bedroom ready. Of course my husband and I don’t agree on a color scheme. Right now we are leaning towards the blues and the greens (minty) but I won’t know till I start looking at paint colors. I was also thinking of doing 2 walls one color and the other 2 a different color. He doesn’t like that idea, the fuddy duddy!!!

My mom then remembered she has some toys she had picked up during her flea market days. She has a few sets of the old wooden blocks with the letters on them and an old set of Lincoln logs.

If all goes on plan it is possible that we would travel to country as early as September. That gives us 7 months to get most of everything ready. I have to take off wallpaper, prime and paint. I will be pulling up the carpeting and putting down a wooden floor instead. Replace all floor molding, have a ceiling fixture installed and replace sliding doors with bifold doors for the closet. I also have to figure out what I am going to do with some of the furniture I have in the room. Some of it will have to go.

There will be so much to do on top of getting all the new paperwork done. If anyone has any ideas for the bedroom I am open to suggestions.

I like the two colour idea. But how about just painting the wal behind where the bed will be a different colour? or even using a nice textured wall paper there. Yellow and Green would be good neutral colours for the room. Especially as you dont know if you are getting a boy or girl.

I can't wait to see the first picture of the 3 of you!!!
I think I would call myself an auntie then. :D :D
I love babies; watching them always leaves me with a very calm feeling. However, I don't know whether I'd be able to take care one. People said it would came naturally, but how?
Perhaps when that happen I'd ask you to be one of my advisors!

That is wonderful news indeed -- and such a touching way of telling it, PnB! I bet your mom can hardly wait -- actually, you all probably can hardly wait! As for decor suggestions -- blargh, interior design is not my forte, my hubby swears that our home is like a 'patchwork quilt'! But thats ok too (he can like it or lump it, home is where the heart is, and all that jazz)...
