The Burthens of Lief
As Jesus told his sacrifice
The skies wept black, the trees swept up
He stripped the world of artifice
And scarred the hand that filled his cup.
As Stephen stood to lose his life
His principles lost to eternity
An author rose to record his strife
And handled ethical gravity.
As Cecilia happened up the stair
Her fate sustained in her fair hands
Her confidence began to wear
But never broke before the stands.
The lists of saints that struggled on
Like the human hymns they lived
Shone crowned in spent glory, a wan
And modest victory still survived.
Open Book
The skies blazed and the oceans churned
The beasts turned and ran.
The forests buzzed and the deserts burned
When the Bible began.
The fathers recanted and sons came awake
Bread melted with the dawn.
Kings saw their followers, lands forsake
And dealt then the Bible went on.
The Word was sown and the Message revealed
The parables were tended.
The earth convulsed and the heavens kneeled
When the Bible ended.
The barriers blurred and the Churches banned
To separate evil and good.
The Meaning was taken from grains of sand
And finally understood.
