Reflections on the puddle of life

Nine

Rate this Entry
It's a number, and also doubles for 'no' in German (ok, yes it would be spelled nein!) which is kind of how I feel today.

My son is nine.

Nine, 9, neuf, niente, neuve and so on.

In preparing for his birthday last night this number hit me like a tsunami. It is nine years ago since he arrived; how has it gone so quickly? It seems such a short time ago, and yet he is so grown up. And in an equivalent length of time he will officially be an adult and then he will be gone.

This is my son when he was born:

And now he doesn't really need me any more

But enough of my moping. Today I made him a birthday cake, or rather cakes as he asked for fairy cakes. As a surprise I've decorated them with white icing with a letter on each cake in different coloured icing so that it spells his name, and if you arrange it in a row it says 'his name' is 9 and there are three stars too. I'm rubbish at icing so thank goodness for Dr Oetker and his ready to roll coloured icing. They look really cool, and I think he will be happy.

So, what do you get for a nine year old boy? Lego wheels of course! And Hayao Miyazaki movies (well, Spirited Away and Astroboy, which is not Miyazaki, but there you go!). And he's got some cash too to spend as he wishes. Or save, whichever.

Ho hum, I feel glum.

Hmmm... he might not need you any more but I betcha he would choose you from among a host of other mammalians!

To add to the list of anime you're considering getting for him might I put in a plug for the ineffably beautiful - if sad - "Death of the Fireflies." There's a later, live actor version of it which I have not seen, but as for the anime, I'd suggest you watch it first before you show it to him, if you do. One or more critics called it "the greatest anti-war film ever made" but to me it was one of the most beautiful love stories I'd ever seen. It involves a 12 (?) year old Japanese boy and his 3 (?) year old sister...

Ahhh anime films are a great world to get into- there is so much art to be discovered within... Millenium Actres, Trigun (series) and Tekkonkinkreet are highly reccomended by mself, whether at this age or a later one. ; )

    Wait until he turns twenty...

Ah he's adorable. Or was. No that is not true. A boy always needs his mother. Ask mine.

and don't forget ninety-nine red balloons!

Cute boys grow up to like computer games and ice cream, After that its good music and hanging with the guys. Next, cars, and then girls. In that order. Well, maybe not.

Girls use body wash and guys use after shave and they go out and smell each other.

Your son was a beautiful baby, and though a child seems to want to 'cut the apron strings', they know that you are always there for them. Happy Birthday to him!

p.s. I smiled about your coloured icing comment. I have trouble with that myself, lol.

He was adorable:D Don't worry, I'm sure he'll always need you, even if at the exalted age of nine he doesn't think so.
