Stuck in conventions

So there was this show called The Ledgend of the Seeker, that when I first heard about it I was really excited becasue it was suppose to be made after Wizard's First Rule, the first book in the Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series. (Those books are a guilty pleasure of mine)
Now I know that when something goes from book to moive, or book to tv, you can execpet it to be changed around, but what they did to that book is really a crime. I mean they so utteraly and completely changed it, it is hardly the same story. They didn't really just to follow the book at all other then the basic general plot, and some of the characters, but even those they changed, some they even eiliminated, and others they added that were never in the book.
But the thing that really annoyed me, is that the main bad guy within the book is very unconvential in his physical apperance, as far as bad guys go. He does not have many of the sterotypical characterisicts that are often given to evil chracters.
In the book he very clearly had blond hair, as many references are made to his hair, as well he wares shinning white robes and has blue eyes.
So what do they do in the tv show? They give him dark hair, and have him walk around in blooed-red colored cloak-jacket thingy.
Ugh! I mean seriously why? Where does it say that all villens must have dark hair? And that a bad guy cannot ware white?
