Gran Torino

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
My wife and I went to the movies to see Clint Eastwood, one of my all time favorite actors, in possibly his last movie, Gran Torino. Is it a great movie? I don’t know, but I did love it. The story is not all that original: hard edged geezer softens for someone not in his world. In this case the geezer is Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski and the people who he befriends are an Asian immigrant family who have become his neighbors. Kowalksi’s wife has recently died and slowly we learn that he is dying too. All he wants is to be left alone, even from his sons and their family, with whom he can’t even relate with any more. Despite initial hostility he slowly begins to form bonds with the immigrant family, especially with the young son who is being pulled into the street gangs in the crippled old Detroit neighborhood. I’ll leave the rest of the story there. If I were to rate the movie, I would give it a seven out of ten. The beginning seemed somewhat clichéd, the old geezer a little too much of a geezer. Let me say that there is quite a bit of profanity in the movie—the blue collar characterization requires it, but I also thought it went too far, especially with the bantering bigotry. Hey I grew up in a neighborhood similar to that and I know that old conservative (and I don’t mean that politically) blue collar type very well, far too well, and while bigoted notions are part of their vocabulary, it doesn’t exactly come out every other sentence. Frankly it becomes schtick in the movie at some point. But, Clint does a fabulous job with the character, making it so believable and over time so endearing. The movie really gets better as it goes along as the bonds between Kowalski and the immigrants builds. They slowly draw him out of his isolation. And the ending is spectacular. If this is Clint’s last movie, it’s a hell of way to go. Kudos to Bee Vang, who plays the immigrant boy and Ahney Her who plays his sister, both as far as I can tell unkown. They were marvelous, and I think Her can grow into a fine actress. She was very charming. And Christopher Carley does a nice job as a persistent priest who gets Eastwood to go to confession.

I absolutely loved the movie’s theme song, and in the movie Clint Eastwood actually sings the first section of it. I went scouring the internet to get it, and I bought it, only to find that the Clint Eastwood section was not included. And then I went looking again and bought it again, thinking I finally found the movie version, but it was the same thing. Stupid me, but it was only 79 cents each. Apparently you can hear the Clint section on youtube, but the song cannot be bought with it. Oh well. Here is the full version with Clint beginning off of youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEXF7...eature=related. Eastwood is given song writing credit for the song. Here are the lyrics, which I love too:

Gran Torino

[*Sung By Clint Eastwood*]
So tenderly your story is
nothing more than what you see
or what you've done or will become
standing strong do you belong
in your skin; just wondering

gentle now the tender breeze blows
whispers through my Gran Torino
whistling another tired song

engine humms and bitter dreams grow
heart locked in a Gran Torino
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long

[*sung by Jamie Cullum*]
Realign all the stars above my head
Warning signs travel far
I drink instead on my own Oh! how I've known
the battle scars and worn out beds

gentle now a tender breeze blows
whispers through a Gran Torino
whistling another tired song

engines humm and bitter dreams grow
heart locked in a Gran Torino
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long

these streets are old they shine
with the things I've known
and breaks through the trees
their sparkling

your world is nothing more than all the tiny things you've left behind

So tenderly your story is
nothing more than what you see
or what you've done or will become
standing strong do you belong
in your skin; just wondering

gentle now a tender breeze blows
whispers through the Gran Torino
whistling another tired song
engines humm and bitter dreams grow
a heart locked in a Gran Torino
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long

may I be so bold and stay
I need someone to hold
that shudders my skin
their sparkling

your world is nothing more than all the tiny things you've left behind

so realign all the stars above my head
warning signs travel far
i drink instead on my own oh how ive known
the battle scars and worn out beds

gentle now a tender breeze blows
whispers through the Gran Torino
whistling another tired song
engines humm and better dreams grow
heart locked in a Gran Torino
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long
it beats a lonely rhythm all night long

Let me just say, I have lots of favorite actors, and some are better actors than Clint Eastwood, but nobody, no actor I have ever seen is cooler--that's right cooler--than Clint Eastwood.

Virgil you may or may NOT know this but Eastwood's old Rawhide series is out on DVD and they have released the first 3 seasons.

All old men look the same to me LOL

Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, and Robert Redford, are all interchangeable in my mind. I am always getting them jumbled up with each other.

I haven't decided yet if I really want to see this movie or note.

Good God. Harrison Ford and Robert Redford are pansies compared to Clint Eastwood. Actually Dark Muse, knowing a little about you, I think you would like this one.

Rich, I've actually never seen an episode of Rawhide. That was even before my time.

Never been a fan of Clint Eastwood myself, he always seemed a bit flat and wooden to me. And his mouth doesn't move which I find disturbing. Glad you enjoyed the movie though. Last movie I went to see at the cinema was Wall-E so probably Gran Torino is better than that

LOL yeah I know, they are nothing alike, but I just have this stigma about them. I am always which one is which again? When when I am thinking about one I will name the other.

Though really I like Harrison Ford the most out of that group. Clint Easwood I can take or leave, and I don't really care for Redford

But in my mind they are just like this three headded monster. They become one person.

Clint Eastwood's performance in The Bridges Of Madison County was so beautiful he should have walked away from acting afterward, because the record shows that every movie he made since have been worse than cliche (!). And all the hype about Million Dollar Baby was scandalous---I watched the film a year after everybody kissed his ars and I concluded that the movie and his performance were flat as a pancake, not to mention that film with him and JLo. Ugh.

My mom is a HUGE fan of Clinte Eastwood. And my dad, although he's stopped watching clinte astwood movies with her because she just drools when he's on screen!

I've seen 'the bridges of...', 'million dollar baby' - not only a great actor but great director too! I've also seen
'tightrope' - liked him in that, and I've seen one of his dirty harry movies - which is his best out of those?

I liked your review, one question - happy ending or not?

The original Dirty Harry is the best in my not so mumble opinion of the five films. The second Magnum Force is good too but they start to go downhill after that.

Bitter sweet to sad ending. Very much like the song that's linked. The song fits very well. Your mother Opti would love this film.

Rich - My favorite Eastwood movies are those Spaghetti westerns he made in Italy.

Just wanted to say I tried leaving comment for you in your blog about Obama's speech but the system doesn't allow it. Anyway I agree with your observation, which is right on---his speech was flat. Yes, well delivered, but nothing jumped out at me---same old same old. Some said it was the speech of a political practitioner. Well, maybe. But he's so lost in his own abstraction that I doubt he knows who he is or what he stands for. He was present but abstained from congressional floor vote over 150 times, hardly the hallmark of somebody who stands for something. Well, we'll soon find out won't we.

This is one of the first movies I want to see when I get back to the States. Oh, and for the record, Every Which Way but Loose will always be my favorite Clint Eastwood movie.

Very good review, Virgil! I wanted to see this film when I first heard about it. But I think this is one that I will have to wait for from Netlflix (it is already on my list ) because I don't know if I will get the time to go. I love Clint Eastwood. As a filmmaker, I personally think he is one of the best and is extremely underrated. Not only that, the man composes great music.

Very simple in terms of composition, but I always find simplicty to be the most effective. It is for me, anyway. Acting wise, I think he is fine. He is sure a helluva lot better than most of the "young" ones that are around nowadays that we must praise so (I don't think you even want me to start on any of them!). I have to definitely agree with you. There is nobody cooler than Clint!

I don't mind Harrison Ford or Robert Redford at all. I actually think all 3 of these men are so different (especially Redford - whom I have always thought wasn't given enough credit as an actor).

I really like that song. I LOOOOVE Jamie Cullum, anyway!!!! I love that man!! He is one of my favorites!!

Oh, come on. I know "Rawhide". Rowdy Yates! I always thought he was so cute in there.

Well, ever since I saw "Unforgiven" in the theaters (so, I was what? About 13 then?), that film stood out to me more than any other movie in his career up to that point. But I really liked "Mystic River". That was a close second to "Unforgiven". Until I saw "Changeling". That film just struck some chord with me. Maybe it was the way he allowed the story to be told, or maybe it was Angelina Jolie's performance, but that may be #1 on my list of his films.

Of course, I have always been a sucker for "Paint Your Wagon".

DJ and Lady Went, if you like Eastwood, you''ll like this and like I said this will be a heck of a way to end his acting career. I'm talking about the ending of the movie, not just the movie itself. I think it's worth seeing in the theatres.

LadyWent - Until now I had no idea he composed music too.

"Paint Your Wagon"-adorable! I like Clint, concerns about his mouth notwithstanding!
He is an icon, and this is not a bad movie to end with. The ending is especially touching, and I think it is a sort of coda to his own career, a tip of the hat if you will. I think he is saying 'I know what I have stood for, but this is who I am.' His character is very much that of the men he played in "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and in the Dirty Harry series, but Walt is a man who has figured out what he needs to do to redeem himself in his eyes.

I found his relationship with the young Hmong kids sweet. My only problem with the movie was the depiction of the family, which made them seem like bad guys. I would have preferred a more nuanced portrayal of them myself. Good review, Virgil.

Thanks qimi. Yes it's a final redemption and I did think it worthy to have him go to confession before the end. I did not think the family was made to seem bad. What makes you think that? They seemed like a very nice family, offering gifts upon gifts. Yes the grandmother was a spitfire, but she was a sort of compliment to Eastwood's character.

    Virgil,
Thanks for posting your original entry.
This past Saturday night my wife and I went to see Gran Torino and we absolutely loved it. I have never been a particularly huge fan of this genre or Clint Eastwood (but I really do love his "other" attempt at singing in Paint Your Wagon. LOL!). I have probably seen all of his movies, eventually, over the past 6 decades (including his TV series Rawhide when I was young and they were in first runs). Few of those movies did I actually see in the first run theater.
Every one of his movies were pure male escapism and that was just fine with me.
Gran Torino did seem to be the culmination of all of his characters from his acting career, and now he can (has?) officially lay them all to rest with Kowalski.
What really had me captivated was the last scene as the credits rolled. We stayed all the way until fade-to-black (note: for those who may yet go to see this movie, there are no cuts waiting at the end to surprise or entertain you, as is recently the fashion. There is just a scene with the credits rolling, Clint Eastwood (initially) singing the theme song of the movie, and a background movie scene. If you leave at the begining of the credits you will miss nothing but those). It was not John Williams. But, I could not leave. I was mesmerized by the lyrics. Since then, I have been searching the web for a couple days to find the lyrics. I stumbled upon your blog and consider it to be a treasure find for me.
I must admit that I was originally searching improperly. I got the lyrics wrong and I was looking for "Gran Torino beats a lonely RIVER all day long." Which, of course, lead me into lots of blinds. I was thinking that a Gran Torino and a Lonely River may also be poker hands (Texas Hold 'Em has The River, thus a Gran Torino could be another poker hand (an ace high straight or flush?) and beats a "lonely river" (an empty straight?), all night long...
But you have corrected my course, and for that I am truly thankful.
Now, that unending sound track playing in my head has to relearn the lyrics. LOL!

Well, hello Tango. I've seen a number of Eastwood movies, but hardly anything close to all. Not even half. I'm not really a movie buff, but I watch a movie every once in a while. I do love that song too and the lyrics really are perfect. I'm amazed that someone did a search and came up with my blog. Well, I guess I'm out there in the virtual world. Feel free to come back to lit net. If you enjoy reading i'm sure there is a discussion here for you.
