To spell or not?

Rate this Entry
There is a spelling bee for homeschoolers coming up this Saturday. My sister is going to be competing while I chose not to. But it was hard to decide that. Why? Without meaning to sound vain, I'm a good speller thanks to the books I've read and I'm already familiar with the words on the list to memorize, so I don't need to study. But I didn't feel that was fair to the others who are competing and had to work so hard to know the words, to have a teenager come in and do well with a minimum of studying. I didn't know what to do. Especially since two out of four or five of my age competitors are friends that I've known for more than half my life. Am I being foolish? My parents and sister said I should do it because my reading should count as studying.
I decided not to do it based on my being so indecisive. Usually I know what I want or need within, max, a day or two. I think it's the right decision, but I would like to know your opinion on whether or not I make sense. Thanks.

You make sense. Friendships take precedent over spelling-bees any day, so if retaining your friends good-will involves forgoing a spelling bee (what we call "self-sacrifice"), then I admire you for it.

Of course, I'm completely masochistic, so perhaps I'm not the best person to answer that question.
