My First Earthquake

Rate this Entry
I got to feel my first earthquake. Nothing special, just a little 4.2 magnitude. I'm personally a little excited by it as a geologist that has spent long times in earthquake zones, and I actually took this puppy for what it was. I estimated the magnitude just from what I saw, clocked in the time, and even reported it. I did have to wait for the USGS to post it on their website before I posted it, as I have never felt one before. Oh well, nothing big to anyone else, but I get a rush. Now I can't sleep and want to look at the seismogram, shake diagram and figure out the strike and slip of the fault.

Congratulations. I live in California, which is part of an earthquake zone but truth to tell, I only actually remember feeling one earthquake; two rolls which left me breathless with excitement!

I think if you don't get to experience earthquakes regularly, they do become a big deal. I remember one that took place about 20 years ago in Massachusetts. It only lasted a few minutes, but my bed shook (it happened around 4 or 5 AM) and I felt just like Linda Blair in the Exorcist.

What part of Alaska were you in? Been meaning to dig a map out at work and see where you are up there.

I've been in Anchorage for the moment, but I work anywhere from 50 to 150 miles east of Barrow.
