Sun Dogs & Sun Pillars in the Prairies

[My First Reasonable Result of a Sun Dog in My Area!]

This particular Blog Entry's photos are like gifts to me, as I always depend on other people's rendition of the Sun Dog and Sun Pillar phenomena -- you see, whenever such spendid sights appear, I don't have a camera handy, or my shots are lousy, or whatever. BUT: this past weekend, I was rather pleased to get the following shots. They are not perfect, but I am deeply grateful that I have them at last, thanks to my trusty Cell Phone (believe it or not, lol)

Behold the Sun Dog phenomena, please enjoy:

And though I am no expert to say the least, these are the closest thing to a Sun Pillar that I've ever seen (no arc, just a blazing 'pillar' of light). The actual sun is on the right side of the photo (compass point WEST) and the 'pillar' would be on the left (compass point EAST):

Believe me when I tell you that I could have stood there snapping pictures much longer, had it not been so frickin' COLD!

I caught an owl in my tree a few evenings ago, which was quite cool, it was a 'sapphire night' (this is hard to explain, but maybe my future photos will illustrate what a 'sapphire night' is to me in the Canadian Prairies). Anyhow, my hubby is nagging me to hurry up to go out for some Sushi (well twist my rubber arm already, lol)

Till next time,

~K♥zzo~

A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, for "beside the sun") is a common bright circular spot on a solar halo. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sun dogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I had actually posted about Sun Dogs a while back OLD SUN DOGs Entry, but I had to delete pictures due to copyright infringements. Nonetheless, the information is still there, the Sun Dogs, Sun Pillars still fascinate me, and yada yada yada.
