No Friends

You know you haven't any friends when the six email messages you receive for the day are from Sax Fifth Ave (2), Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, Mod Cloth, and the chaplain at the hospital (because you're on his distribution list).
Went into Hot Topic (an alternative store) last week. The guy behind the counter's eyes grew wide at my arrival, and I had to smile to myself because I knew what he was thinking (what I used to think when I was young): Cool Person Alert!
Stuck in the middle of homogenyville, an individual grows desparate for any sort of connection with another similiar to them. I grew up in a small town and know how it is to feel - different (heck, I'm "different" here, and I'm 37 years old!)
We started conversing; it was he who turned me on to Beck's E-Pro. Everything I'd heard from Beck I didn't like (like "Loser" - did not infuse me with the desire to dance.) So then I stumbled across some additional bands with terrible radio hits but really danceable, obscure tunes.
I think I'm going to revisit the shop tomorrow - I need to feel "connected".
And FWIW, there are no indie coffee houses in this area, no slam poetry events, no 80's nights at bars, no *truly* underground techno scene, no goth clubs - nada.
I am completely alone.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Think not those faithful who praise all thy words and actions; but those who kindly reprove thy faults.
