Empty Words

Empty Words

Sometimes words ring hollow
in my ears
meaningless dribbles
dripping upon the page
like drops of paint
forming at the end of a brush
before splattering
in unplanned places

I wonder at their necessity
grasping inside for something
deeper
while always
coming up empty
is there a masterpiece
in these mistakes
or are they just proof
of inefficiency

A fist full of air never
to be breathed
what is being accomplished
in such diatribe
is it the thing that
makes us human
or the reason why
we are so inhumane

We all pretend
nodding and grinning
in some pathetic display
why not toss the garbage
over the side
but then
what would be left.

I read this one last night and started to free think it through then got bogged down on the layers of communication being revealed, concealed, known and not known--finally sighed "GAMES" (which is a reference to an old but chilling Tomb of Dracula comic where Vlad outdoes himself in cruelty--even for him.) Issue 33 if I recall--he tosses his mortal enemies daughter's ashes around the room laughing at his distraught foe's torment. The caption read GAMES and had intrigued me ever since. A good writer can convey so much in so little. By the way-third verse--First or Fist--puzzled over that awhile thinking about typos or interesting turns of phrase.
