Informal Formalities

Rate this Entry
It absolutely boggles my mind how little some people know about how to speak to their superiors.

I mean, I know to an extent that certain boundaries have been broken down as of late; and I definitely cannot imagine my generation displaying some of the more useless signs of respect which are simply formalities. I know that we are becoming more and more informal and it is becoming more and more accepted, but this is riduculous!

Sitting behind me at this very moment is a fellow tutor. She is on the phone with a professor... a certain "Dr. Mohani" or some such name. She is asking him...or rather, telling him to write her letter of recommendation today by three o'clock.

I can hear the professor saying that he needs more time, and that she should have asked earlier, and all she says is "well, all the other professors have gotten me my letters. Prof. such-and-such got it to me the same day I asked him." She keeps on talking to him almost like as if he is some high school friend, throwing in personal remarks such as "Well, I'll need to overnight this through FedEx if you're not going to get it to me until tommorow...so you're going to have to give me a ride to the FedEx office before my lunch so that I can send it on time."

I'm hearing the professor's indignant reply on the other side. Now, I could understand this kind of conversation happening between a student and professor that have a really friendly, informal relationship that perhaps even crosses paths outside of school...but the professor on the other side really does not sound like he's appreciating the suggestion being made.

She continues to giggle and say his name in a whiny voice that reminds me of a schoolgirl begging her boyfriend to give up his night with the boys for her.

"Well, you're already going to make me give up my lunch tommorow to FedEx this application, so it's only fair that you give me a ride to FedEx and then drop me off to my internship afterward. You are the only person I'm waiting on. You told me that if I wanted to get something done that I would have to get behind it and follow up on it all the time, and here I am following up and you're just telling me no. That's not fair."

~sigh~

Just felt like ranting.

I look forward to the tutor suing the professor for withholding the referral which resulted in disminished ability to have a full life resulting in a sudden promotion to full tenure. (Where are those smiley icons--they come and go!!)(Pretend it's here.--Please?)

Pathetic. It's as much the professor's fault for not projecting someone requiring respect.
