Cell phones are evil

Rate this Entry
I acutally have a whole phone phobia thing, seriously. I hate using the phone, I hate even calling people that I know on the phone. And the thought of having to use a phone always gives me anxiety. I never answer the home phone when it rings.

And so I never thought that I would ever own a cell phone, never saw any reason to have one, never had any desire to have one, but I have one now but only for very speicific reasons.

One of the main things I use it for is sense I do not drive, I use it to call someone to pick me up from school when I get out of class.

And it is nothing fancy, it dosen't have a zillion funtions on it, it does not do anything cool, it is one of those prepaid phones where I just buy minitue cards for it.

The only time I ever acutally have it with me, is when I have a particular use for it, most of the time it stays turned off in my bedroom.

There are litteraly only 3 people who have my cell number, so when it happens to be turned on it is becasue I am expecting a call from someone who I know, so on the rare chances that my phone does ring, or when I turn it on and have a voice mail, I make the presumption that it is the one person I want to talk to.

It never is, it is always either a wrong number or some telemarketer.

It took me at least a year before I began to have a very grudging liking for the cell phone that the Long Suffering Wife bequeathed on me and truthfully if I dared tell you (which I can't) MUCH evil came from that transaction little did I guess how much trouble I could get into with such a little toy. Sigh. Yes they are evil--they promise the world and deliver only voice mails and busy signals.

Evil by nature through and through magnified a hundred fold in the hands of the automobile driver.

I was a late comer to cell phones too, but I do think they are a necessity. Dark Muse, you should carry one just in the event of an emergency. Time may be critical and a handy phone is critical. By the way, what exactly is your phobia with phones about? What are you scared of, if you don't mind me prying?

I do not know exzactly what it is about the phone. I cannot really put it into words, but it is related to my general disliking of having to deal with people. And on the phone you are acutally exepcted to have to come up with some sort of conversation and I am not the kind of person who comes up with conversation on the spot. I do much better just responding to what other people are saying. That is one of the things I do not like about the phone. It is like I am being put on the spot all the time on the phone

I completely agree Muse, I despise mobile phones for a multitude of reasons. I currently have a mobile for work and it very rarely gets used. I find mobile phones very intrusive: if I'm out then I'm out. If someone wants to call me they can call me at home. And people who are out and on their mobile phones go into their own little bubble and forget that they are not in the privacy of their home, and quite often behave in a way that is both ignorant and rude. I bet if most people monitored what they use their mobiles they would find most of the calls are unnecessary. It makes sense for emergencies, but then we used to have call boxes for those. Do people really need to ring home to ask what's for dinner? I hear that a lot on the train. Really, can't people wait? Text messaging makes me mad too, but that's a whole different subject! Oh, wasn't it simpler when there was no such thing as the mobile phone?

I fundamentally agree that they are evil, but they can be useful in some circumstances.

I pretty much use my cell phone just to let someone know I am running late or if I am expecting an important phone call and I know I won't be home to answer it.
Fifth, I totally agree with you that some people forget that they are in a public place when talking on their cell phone. The stories that I have heard while riding the bus to and from work!!!!!

Actually very few pople call me on the cell phone. I hardly ever give it out as a primary number. On ocaision my boss will call, but that's pretty rare. My wife, the real boss, the big boss, is the only one who regularly calls me on the cell. But I find it indispencible to be able to call from out side. Especially when I travel. You don't even see pay phones much anywhere. And I refuse to pay the hotel phone charges.
