I will build a fire tonight

Rate this Entry
I just finished the hardest week of the semester. I’m so glad it’s behind me. I’m able to clean house today instead of sit in front of the computer and ignore the needs of my children. Very nice!

You may know that we moved into this little 100 year old farm house a few years ago and we’ve been adding on and remodeling- we‘re doing all the work ourselves. A couple of months ago we moved into the new bedrooms. We are now about to finish the drywall in the living room. We’ve been using what will be the dining room as a living room. My desk is in here. It’s a large dining room, but not a large living room. Today we’ll be moving my desk into the office which and putting the wood stove back where the desk was. We are building a brick platform for the stove to sit on. I’ll have a fire tonight. Doesn’t that sound fancy? I’m so excited. We had two bedrooms between the six of us for so long and now I have an office. It’s been so much hard work and it’s been so slow at times. I see a light at the end of the tunnel. We’ll be in the living room for Christmas. That will just leave two baths and my closet.

Once we are in the living room I’m going to scrape the ceiling in here and paint and put down new floors and move the light fixture. Then I’m going to repaint my kitchen and build another countertop. I think I’ll have all of that, except maybe the countertop, done by the time next semester begins.

My camera died or I would post pictures of the house and the dog.

The fire is going already. I just want to sit and watch it. I don't know how I'll get any work done now. Also, I made a nutella cheese cake. It has to sit in the fridge for a couple more hours.

Yes pictures (especially of the dog ) would be nice. This sounds like a wonderful house. And you and your husband did all that work yourselves. That's great. I don't know if I have it in me to do a ot of home fix-it work any longer. The older I get, the more I fight stuff like that. But you are able to put down hard wood floors yourself? That's pretty skillfull if you can. I guess it's not too hard but it does require a certain technique. Or won't they come out warped? Oh and then the sanding and lacquering. Such a pain. My uncle has put down hard wood floors trhroughout his whole house. But he's way handier than the average guy. He's better than most professionals.

I really admire such self sufficiency. Enjoy your fireplace. You've earned it.

Virgil, I decided to go with laminate this time. It has a warranty and goes down so easily that I can do it all by myself. We did hard wood in our log cabin and it took a little more work. It was harder to maintain, more expensive and if you dropped a dresser it would leave a mark. The laminate doesn’t leave a mark at all. I’m actually very pleased with the laminate. It doesn’t sound like real wood when I step on it, but I like it. My husband has really had his nose up about it because it’s not real wood, but I think even he is converted.

Well real wood can give you splinters so we're all good. Sounds like a great Christmas ahead for you as the house becomes the home you dream of.

Well, it sounds like you are really getting a lot done. It is nice that the livingroom will be done in time for Christmas. Oh, and the fire sounds extrememly good!! It is about 28 degrees outside (but I swear it is like 18 degrees inside!). I could really go for the warmth of that fire right now!

That is great news! I'm so glad that you are slowly moving things along with the house. The same is going here, and I'll post pictures if I ever find my camera cord:lol: I'm still sitting on the ones from Halloween and unable to download them. Much Love, Meg
