Most Memorable Holiday Moment

Rate this Entry
With the holidays coming up (Hanukah, Christmas, Kwanza and New Years) I thought I'd write a blog entry about the day I got engaged. My husband proposed on Christmas morning.
Before I tell the story, let me back track a little. My husband and I were going out for a few years before we got engaged. I always knew from the start that he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. It had gotten to the point where I gave him an ultimatum, either make a committment to me or it's over. I'll never forget the sound of his voice when I told him this. He told me he wants to marry me but not now. I then dropped the conversation. Fast forward to Christmas eve 1989.
We are at his parents house and like a little kid I start feeling the presents that are for me. I feel the big one first and I'm thinking to myself, he bought me a book ? How strange Then I feel the smaller one and I couldn't figure out what it was so I had to wait until it was time to open the presents.
Ok, it's now midnight and its time to open the presents. I open the big one first and I was right. It was a book. A cookbook of all things. (I still have this cookbook by the way). I'm like, ok a little wierd but I still had one more to go. With trepidation I opened up the other gift. Are you ready for this ? It was a twin cassette of Swan Lake! I didn't even like this kind of music I'm sitting there with such a dumbfounded look on my face I didn't know if I should laugh or cry
His mother gave him a look like "what the hell is that ?"
He took me home and spent the night ( come to think of it, I don't know why I let him stay after those lovely gifts).
Christmas morning we woke up and he said to me "I have another gift for you". Well, you could probably imagine what I was thinking at this point, so I said what ? another lovely gift ?
He reached over the side of the bed and then turned to me and said "would you marry me '?
Of course I said yes, then hit him for making me go thru what I did the night before.
The ring was a fake diamond until we were able to go pick out a real ring. It only fit my pinky but I didn't care. I was getting married!!!!!

Aw, what a lovely story. You must have loved him if you let him stay the night after all those little disappointments!

Haha, aww! How sweet. I especially like how you've recounted his mother's reaction.

I read this the other day and didn’t have time to comment, but I wanted to come back and tell you that I enjoyed the story. I wonder what he was thinking when he got you those gifts I love to hear people say that they are still happy after some time has passed. Too often people don't and that's a shame.
