Lord of the Rings

Rate this Entry
I just finished watching The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and I must admit tears streamed down my face when Boromir was shot and as he lay dying. Such nobility and courage and splendor! I miss that. The gentle wisdom of Gandalf. The humanity of Boromir. Aragorn buckling on Boromir's vambraces. The glory of Galadriel. I read tales like that and wonder, did such valor truly exist? Does it exist even now? It seems rather unlikely. Now you get stories of FBI agents hired to gun down this that and the other terrorist, and fall in love with someone who's really an assassin of sorts.

I know that the Lord of the Rings films and stories will forever remain one of my favorite stories. Forget the length of the book and the "editing" of the movie. There's nothing I've read as grand as this book except for the Bible. Then I must say that not even Boromir's sacrifice of his life can measure up to Jesus' willingly giving up his life and taking on the sins of all time for the love of humankind. What wondrous love is this?

What do you think of Galadriel? If you remember my first avatar, you'll know she's one of my favorite characters. Unfortunately, many people think she's rather scary, at least in the movie. I revere both book and movie Galadriel.
And I think Cate Blanchett, the lady that plays her, would be rather nice to meet.

My entire family says that were I in Middle-earth, I'd be an elf. I'd love that, but I'm sure all you have to say is, "dream on."

I will.

Yes, that sort of valor and sacrifice and nobility does exist now. It's just that real life is more complicated, so those notions sometimes get obscured with other issues. But it's all around us. For instance, nothing requires valor and sacrifice and nobility more than giving birth to a baby. Giving birth is a hard thing for an entire nine months climaxed with a moment of existential crises. We are more confident now of a woman living through the experience, but historically it was certainly in doubt. Giving birth is truely a heroic act, and just look around you. Every one you see was born of a mother who obviously went through such a heroic experience.

You are, of course, right. Thanks for your insight, Virgil.
