Upon leasing a new studio space I continued to work in the same direction until the collages covered an entire wall. At this time I began to exhibit the work publicly... including entering a grouping of the pieces into a major museum exhibition. The work actually made it to the final weeding out... but in the end it was rejected (Iwas later informed) because of the huge scale (almost 14-feet horizontal:
Following the completion of this body of work I was listening a great deal to Bach's solo keyboard work... especially the Goldberg Variations and the Well Tempered Clavier. I was fascinated with the manner in which Bach could convey such a range of emotions and such variety within a strictly confined structure adhering to a common motif. I decided to set myself a similar task: to produce a body of work... a series of variations upon a single motif...
... limiting myself also with regard to color and materials. This body of work... collectively entitled, Meditations Upon a Theme by J.S. Bach led me to learn a great deal about composition, balance, pattern, and patience. There is no angst-laden thrashing about while wielding an Exacto-knife. The resulting work includes some of my strongest work, to date:
As I exhibited these works I began to group the individual pieces into pairing, trios, quartets, etc... seeking out a greater complexity as might be found in the relationship between pieces:
Ghost Sonata
Canzoniere
Terza Rima
A Gathering of Poets
