predator

We have a winged predator lurking around here. We discovered it this morning, feasting on something that must’ve been a carcass. I know it was a bird of prey. It’s beak was curved. I went out and shooed it away. We have lots of small birds and we suspect our robins have had chicks. I looked it up in the bird book and I think it was a sparrowhawk. Female, which means she could have chicks and then we’ll lose all of our little birds. Our bluetits lost a chick about two years ago (it seemed to have fallen and cracked its head) We wrapped it up and placed it on our thorny grave for birds and the mouse that Henry caught once.
I’ll research them when I’m not so tired.
Also, I had fun teasing one of our squirrels.
I went outside to look for this predator but couldn’t see it. Then I noticed a wood pigeon and stood, waiting for it to forage on the floor. They take ages to do anything. Then I through out some peanuts for them and went to fill the nut feeder. The squirrels have gnawed through it and now it can’t go on the branch. Then I became aware of the two squirrels nearby and hung around trying to coax them over to say hello. After many failed attempts I had the idea to tie some monkey nuts on a string and dangle it from a stick, I would call it squirrel fishing. But it was too cautious and took one of the nuts on the floor, furthest from me, so when it went I tossed the end of the string to where it had taken the nut, keeping hold of the other end. When it found them it tried to eat the nut and I gave it a little tug and it tried again. This was repeated a couple of times and twice it picked up the nut on the end and tried to run off with it. Needless to say it failed. So it went off and came back a while later to try again. But it soon got bored and I took the string inside and called mum to tell her.
I’m thinking of trying it tomorrow, just to see what it’ll do. I like setting them small challenges sometimes and enriching their way of eating (like when I drilled holes in some monkey nuts and threaded them onto a string and tied the string to the tree. The sneaky little buggers gnawed straight through the string and took all of the nuts. They’re quite clever really)
Well, I’ve been promising a proper update for a while but it’s too late now. But fear not, I shall do it eventually.
Bluebiird out.
