the first day of school

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
This is my first day with no kids in the house. My chores are done and so now it seems really quiet. I almost like it but Max cried this morning so that takes away from the experience some.

Mason has been afraid for about two weeks. He has had trouble sleeping and he’s been emotional. He was worried about starting school so I fully expected to have some trouble this morning. No trouble at all. He kissed me goodbye and took his seat with a big excited smile on his face. Max was disappointed that he wouldn’t be going and was elated when he found out that he was going to go to school. It’s all he’s talked about for the past several days. This morning he woke up not wanting to go and he cried when it was time for me to leave the classroom.

Of course I feel guilty but I know from experience that I would feel just as guilty for keeping him home another year. Sometimes motherhood is a thankless job.

Now I have a couple of hours to myself. It feels strange. I’ve decided I’m going to go get my walk in and then I’m going to fix a pork roast and a beef roast with root veggies, rolls, sliced tomatoes, and an apple pie. I think the kids will like a special meal for the first day.

Other than the sound of animals outside it’s so quiet.

I remember my younger brother was like that. Once I had to take him to school and he would not let me go, he was crying so much. Its the adjustment time, I think; the kids see only the home environment, and when they see school its different, new faces, new feeling, more kids of the same age group.

Boy, a pork roast AND a beef roast! They are lucky and I certainly hope they enjoy it! I am actually quite jealous of them right now! Well, you know all will probably be fine tomorrow. I can remember how I HATED going on the first day. By the end of the week, though, it was like I had gone to school my entire life! I am sure he will be the same. Guaranteed!

I was at lunch with my boss today and I asked him when his kids start school. They don't start until after Labor day, the first week of September. You do start earlier than around here. I think even my nieces in Ohio start that first week of September.

I wish we had a little more time. How long do they go in the spring?

Not sure any more. When I was in school we went well into June. Perhaps we end later.

We're in our 5th week of 3rd term (out of a 10 week term, and out of 4 terms) so it's weird hearing about first days! I hope you enjoyed the quiet

That's a bittersweet experience. You want them to grow, but it's wrenching, nonetheless. How about this-my middle son, who's 18 and just graduated in June, joined the marines this week. Normally I would be fine with that, and he has other options in his life, but right now...well, I'm getting ready to go into denial...I said "Well, there's lots of places he might go," and my other son said, "Mom, he's in the marines; their the first to go." Hopefully by the time he's finished with training and school, do you think? That's going to take a long time, at least a year...

Oh, I just don’t know what to say. He made an honorable choice and I appreciate his desire to serve his country. But I weep for you. Of course I pray every day that our men (boys most of the time) and women (girls) will come home, but I will absolutely redouble my efforts. I’m sorry that you have to face that fear. My boys are so young but I already worry. My husband is ex-military and would be proud for his sons to serve. I dream of shooting them in the feet.

All I can say to you two in the last two posts is, boys have to grow up and be men. College is certainly preferable, but some boys need something else. Every one is different.

Yeah, I absolutely agree-I am proud he will be serving his country, but I would rather he grow to be a man with his feet on American soil (may the gods' of patriotism and democracy not strike me dead). Thank you motherhubbard, for your understanding and concern.
