The Boardwalk

Rate this Entry
Since my gym has cutback on classes for the summer especially on the weekend, I have started walking on the boardwalk. It's about a 10 minute drive from my house. I started a week and a half ago with my mother. The first time we walked 4 miles which took me an hour and a half. I walk at a steady pace and don't stop. This past Sunday our friend from the gym came with us. It was so much nicer walking along the boardwalk than doing the treadmill in a stuffy room. I found that I am not as bored and don't watch the timer to see how far I've gone or how many miles I have done.
So this morning I decided to go back and walk by myself. I had my water bottle and Ipod and started off. As I was walking I noticed a wild turkey and her babies. Yes, a wild turkey!!!. There's a part of the island where I live that these turkey's inhabit. The local's aren't thrilled with them. By the way, what do you call baby turkey's?
Anyway, I walked out onto one of the piers where people fish. I don't think anyone was catching anything. There were a lot of people on the boardwalk. They were either walking, jogging or riding their bikes.
After my 45 minute walk I sat down on a bench and just cooled down. The breeze from the ocean felt nice against my face. You know, I have to admit that now that I have the boardwalk to go to I don't mind doing the walking.
Hope all have a nice day!

That sounds so nice, Pussnboots! I am envious!

I am trying to walk for at least half an hour every morning since my holidays started but walking along the same pavements day in, day out is no fun.

That sounds lovely, Pussnboots. I hate using a treadmill when I know I can walk outside.
A baby turkey is called a "poult," by the way.

That sounds so wonderful. I wish you would post pictures, I'm not real sure just what a boardwalk is.

Well, that's intersting. I would have thought they would just be chicks. Yeah, those wild turkeys are a nuissance to the locals. I guess if they're by the boardwalk now, they have spread out. I always thought they were only by Seaview Avenue, on the hospital grounds, but I have lately seen them further out too. Funny story is that some of the new immigrants to the area (I forget if they were Russian or Chinese immigrants) didn't realize that they were protected and they caught and killed a few. I guess they thought it was a cheap dinner. I think they got fined, so it wasn't so cheap.

It is good to change the routine up a bit. My husband and I used to hike a mountain near his house, and there were turkeys on it. One day, one of those turkeys came screeching down the mountian - scared the heck out of me. I didn't like the sound it was making and there was all this rustling of the leaves. and since we were on the side of mountain, there was really no way to go except up or down, and both are challenging. Luckily, the turkey didn't attack. But it sounded like it was going to. stupid turkey.

Exercise outside is always so much better than the gym! I'm jealous that you have such a nice beach to walk along. I'm getting into rowing, but I don't see me having the time to do much kayaking and such:lol: I'm just stuck with my rowing machine. Maybe I should go sit it along a river or something;)

mkhockenberry: I wouldn't say the beach is nice but the boardwalk is. If anyone is familair with downtown Manhattan along West street you can go kayaking.

Shalot: at least it was just a turkey and not a mountain lion!

You make walking sound like so much fun! I have a lot of laughs with my dog Pepper, who comes with me for hour to hour-and-a-half walks through the woods and then some. Sometimes we have not so good adventures (my blog is riddled with a few dillies), but most of the time, it is great fun and I'd not miss it for the world. Enjoy your walks, I'll think of you tomorrow when we head out! -- K♥zzo
