A tribute to my hero

Rate this Entry
I went to high school with this guy. We would have graduated together, but I graduated a year early. We weren’t friends, but he said something once that really left a positive impression. He was running for sr. class president and his opponent was a girl. Someone said he should say something about how he was the right “man” for the job and just take some jabs at her gender. He stood up and looked that person square in the face and said that he wouldn’t make himself look bigger by tearing someone else down. I was really impressed. I don’t know who won the election.

Do any of you know someone who bullies others, says hateful things, rallies others to their cause of persecution, or just generally tires to make themselves appear better than others or possible feel better about themselves by putting others down? Maybe some of you are like that yourself. I wonder if people who are like that are very self aware. Often these people have few deep or meaningful bonds with others. Their relationships are very self serving. I think that most of us see right through people like this. The more outlandish or abrasive they become the more of their nasty or just weak nature they reveal. Sometimes I almost feel sorry for people who show their bottoms and don’t even realize how exposed they are, but then I think it probably serves them right.

I know a woman who is just the opposite of this. The most caring and giving woman on Earth. I’m so lucky to call her friend. This woman behaves in a way and speaks in a manner that truly brings out the best of people. She makes people see their potential and their greatest self and believe that they can become that wonderful person. What an amazing talent. Shirolyn has been such a significant influence in my life over the past ten years. She has helped women and families in my area more than any other person. She has made this community a better place. I’m always amazed at how the most humble and unassuming people can carry the most amazing strength and capacity for helping others.

It’s hard to sum up the deep love and admiration I feel for this woman. It’s also hard to express the positive impact she has had on my life or the things she has done for me. I wish everyone could feel the benefit of knowing her.

I just wanted to say a little something about how wonderful some people can be, especially Shirolyn. It’s such a contrast to what others are. What makes the difference? What kind of people are we? What makes us that way? I think these things are worth examining. Shirolyn lives to help others. She is the most joyful and satisfied woman I know. Even during times of adversity in her own life she has peace. I wish I were more like her. actually, I wish we all were.

Wow, he's pretty good. I don't know country that well so I've never heard of him. Is he big? I do have heroes like that, but that woman sounds great. Some people are so selfless. It amazes me.

I don't like country either. I just thought his statement went along with what I was saying about my friend. I don't know if he's big. I know I’ve heard him on the radio (the rest of the family likes country) but that may just be because he’s a hometown boy. After I posted I was afraid he would look like the hero in the title, but I hope not.

What a beautiful blog entry. You have left us all with lots to mull over, for you made some excellent and thought-provoking points. You are truly blest to have a friend such as this, and blessed to recognize these things that you have shared here. All too often, we even take our friends for granted. Thanks for your words! K♥zzo

I didn't say I didn't like country. I'm just not up on it. Frankly it's just a twangy version of rock.

I just don't much like the twang or songs about trucks. there are a hand full of songs I like, but they are really old.
