I mentioned that I haven’t been grocery shopping in some time. My husband had been picking up milk and the like for us when he goes through town. But my fridge has been pretty full of different things that go into the fridge and then never come out like condiments and left-overs. . After the power outage I had to toss everything in the fridge. I kept the eggs, butter, and carrots. We have a couple of deep freezers and everything there was still frozen solid
Now, this week is vacation Bible school and we have a potluck each night. Additionally, I teach a class and it’s really a lot of preparation. On top of that I have extra children. My nephew has been staying with us for the past three days and will go home tomorrow night, a neighbor girl spent the day with us yesterday, and a couple of different neighbor kids stayed with us for most of the day. We’ve been having a great time with the children. We’ve gone to two different creeks to swim, played with the animals, enjoyed vbs, I made some jiffy pop. It’s been great. But that’s a lot of mouths to feed which strangely hasn’t been an issue. I know I should have gone to the grocery store, but I really didn’t want to take six kids shopping.![]()
I went out early this morning to get my outside chores done and my garden had a real variety for the first time this year. I got lettuces, zucchini, green peas, sugar peas, banana and jalapeño peppers, green beans, and radishes. It was exactly enough salad to feed all of us. Then I came in and looked for something to go with it. What I found was that I had an abundance of food to prepare. I found myself undecided on just what to serve. I finally decided on the salad with carrots from the fridge and some boiled eggs from the hens, 9 grain bread that I made a couple of days ago, jelly that I had already put up, and baked potatoes. I think that’s a fantastic meal. As soon as I got things going my husband called from town to see what I needed him to pick up. I had him get a couple of pizzas for pizza night at vbs and that was all I could say we really needed. I like opening the fridge and seeing it all but empty. It looks clean and uncluttered. I have plenty of veggies in the garden and there is a variety of meat in the freezer. My pantry is getting to where I can tell what I have left. I’ve decided I’m not going shopping on Saturday either.![]()
Anyway my point is that when I opened the fridge this morning there was butter, eggs, milk, and carrots, but I found my cup running over. I am always happy when I discover something else in my life that I can get rid of. I’m always amazed at how little we really need. It truly seems that the less I get or have, the more blessed I am. I see others who are still trying to acquire more and more and I feel like they are trying to buy peace or happiness. How sad, and ironic as well.
