power outage

Rate this Entry
We had such a storm Sunday night. I’ve been without power for the past couple of days. In the country there is no water when there is no electricity. I really like electricity!

I’ve been mudding my drywall during out outage, but now I have to get cleaned up and head to town. Everything in the fridge is ruined and we have a potluck each night for VBS this week.

I haven’t been going to the grocery store for the past month or two. I can’t remember if I had mentioned that. It’s been really great. I have my husband stop for milk or flour and we eat what we have in the pantry, deep freeze, and garden. We have actually been having better meals than we’ve had in a while.

My garden is doing well enough, but I wish we were getting more out of it. I put it out late and regret it. I’m still praying that I’ll wake up and my garden will have just exploded in veggies. It’s so disappointing to walk out there and not pick something.

One more thing about the power being out. I had just hatched some eggs. I incubated 18, hatched five, and three have survived. A baby chick has to be kept warm so we had a heat lamp on them out in the part of the house that‘s under construction. The past couple of days have been really chilly so I decided I better bring in a hen to keep them warm. I have this one hen that is so mean- we call her the mean momma. She always wants to sit and I always have to fight her for her eggs. I brought her in and she’s taking very good care of the little babies. It’s so funny- some mother hens are so nice and they talk sweet and gather their babies up but this hen is so mean even to the chicks. She uses a grouchy sound with them and when they don’t mind her she pecks them. Some say ‘oh come here baby and I’ll warm you up’ this one says ‘get over here right now or I’m gonna peck you!’ I’ve found that baby chicks are a lot like preschoolers, roosters are a lot like men, and hens are a lot like women.

I don't know what I would do without power for a couple of days!!! I hope it comes back on soon. Its a good thing you didn't have much in your fridge.
Maybe you shld peck Mean Momma when she pecks at her babies to see if she likes it HAHA!!
Don't feel bad about your vegetables. We got a late start also. The only thing that is taking off right now for us is our grape vine. Lots of grapes growing. No, we don't make wine from them. My husband eats them. I don't because I don't like seeds in grapes.

I put out grapes every year and every year the die The power is back on now, but it was a long couple of days. I think I missed the water more than the power. I'm all clean now!

That was a funny entry! I mean, apart from the power outage! The mean momma reminds me of two hens that belong to my brother, and when he goes and take the eggs, they get mad and peck, so he has to bring the dog with him there! Oh, what you say about being all clean reminds me of the problems I had in my apartment with water, once I got out of it for one whole week....

Amazing you haven't gone to the supermarket in so long. You are really self sufficient, a true American. You don't live in a log cabin and read by the fireplace?

So I suspect Mean Momma will be on the menu someday??

Virgil, I'm not 100% self sufficient. Like I said, My husband has to get milk, flour, sugar, and toilet paper. Sometimes he brings in a soda . Rich, Unless something happens to them first all hens will make the menu as soon as they quit laying. The thing is it’s really hard to know who the eggs came from. Hens are safer than roosters any day.

Well, we can't live without toilet paper. How did they do that in the old days? Actually i'm not sure I really want to know.
