don't know what to call this

I’ve been absent. It feels like a really long time, but I suppose it’s only been a few days. I miss this place when I’m not able to log on for a while.

The cherries have kept me busy lately. It’s really amazing how much fruit one cherry tree can produce. My neighbor has two trees and I can’t imagine having more than that. We have picked and picked. I’ve been working them up by hand so that I can check for worms as I go, but it’s really easy work. It’s just time consuming. Tonight I watched The Fellowship of the Rings while I did the cherries and it took me the entire movie to finish. I picked three gallons, my neighbor picked 3 gallons, and her son-in-law picked four gallons - all just today. So far I’ve picked nine gallons of cherries, I plan to pick again on Wednesday and then maybe once more after that. My raspberries are nearly ripe, too. I plan to start picking them on Thursday. Blackberries will be ripe next week or the week after. The apples will be ripe just after that. By the time the blackberries are ripe I should be putting up veggies out of the garden.

The kids and I went to my friend’s house Friday to meet some of her friends from Kansas. The couple were so great and they had three amazing kids, 2 boys and 1 girl- all teenagers, and they brought four teenaged boys with them. Every one of them were so fantastic. My friend’s sister had a goat to slaughter and the men did that and cooked it. I had not had goat before and it was very tasty. I took cherries and we made pie (and jam) and side dishes to take to her sister’s for the cookout, but it stormed and everyone came to my friends to eat. It was so much fun! She lives way way out in the heart the mountains and so we spent the night rather than drive home in the storm.

When I got home my husband had finished putting up all of the drywall in the ceiling of the addition. This means that I have air conditioning! We have it set on 78 and it feels cold to us. This will make canning so much nicer. I’m really proud of all of his hard work. I think we will start taping the walls this week. We are so close now.

I quit going grocery shopping a few weeks ago. I just pick up milk when I need it or have my husband bring in flour or sugar. I haven’t really made a dent in the deep freezers yet, but I’m getting some space in the pantry. I’m thinking that at this rate it will be Thanksgiving before I really have to get groceries for the us, but I will probably have to get things for VBS and fellowship meals.

That is everything that has been going on with me. I promise to attempt a really interesting blog about something other than what is going on on my little farm next time.

I know what it is to have all those fruits to take care of! In our garden we have lots of strawberries. I don't pick them up but I prepare them, clean them and all, and I do the same for the vegetables, and then my mother makes cakes or jam with the fruits. It's been a long time since I last ate cherries though.

sounds like fun. Me on the other hand, I've been logging on to the internet too much, only to find that nothing has changed and no one has commented on my posts or posted a new bulletin on myspace or chucked me a book at Facebook or responded to my comments on the local news site since I last longed on (20 minutes ago). poor me!! At least you have a life!!

It does sound like fun, except for slaughtering the goat. Poor thing. I like my meat from a supermarket package. It doesn't feel like it was really alive that way. Lots of cherries. I didn't realize cherries were picked this early in the season. And by the way, you are missed here.

I'm with Virgil - I like prepackaged meat - or else I can't eat it. I envy for your life, MotherHubbard. It must be so nice to have a garden and a farm with lots of children around and a husband. It seems so far away from what surrounds me - urban life, drugs, sleaze, drunkards, etc.

I would be a terrible giest as their is no rfruit I'm willing to eat. I have extremely fussy tastebuds that I allow full reign and one of the few things that I rarely indulge the wishes of others. But my parent sowuld have loved canning and gardening and all that went with it. My grand-father was a dairy farmer and I'm told was quite good at it (if not such a nice person to know.)

I like the way you multi-task. I'm wondering though, have you ever had a day where you just lie around in your robe and watch Oprah? I was just on her site and filled out a survey on procrastination. I have to tell you, I was thinking of you. NOT because you are a procrastinator but because I would like to follow you around for a day.
