It Pays To Be Handy

About a week ago I noticed that my clothes dryer wasn't working that strongly. What would normally take 30 minutes to dry was taking more than an hour. The inside of the dryer was hot but when I checked the outside vent there wasn't much air coming out. I didn't tell my husband because I was determined to fix this myself.
Well today I finally had the last straw and I decided to disconnect the vent. I had to pull the dryer away from the wall and reach down to disconnect it. I could not believe what I saw A pile of lint was clogging the vent where it connects to the dryer. In addition to the lint, there was what looked to be like makings of a birds nest. At times the birds will fly into the vent and build a nest. My husband had put a rubber ball in the vent that would prevent the birds from getting in but still allow air to come out. The lint plus this bird gook filled a plastic shopping bag (the kind from the supermarket).
I proceeded to hook the vent back up and turned the dryer on. Lo and behold, I fixed the problem
I would have been embarrassed if I had called for someone to come out and take a look at it when all it was was clogged. I'm sure I saved at least $100 by doing this myself.

Fantastic!! Here is a puff of Enjoli just for you *** PUFF *** it feels good to be handy. Now that you've done it and know that you can I see no problem in letting the husband manage such things from now on though. I think they kind of like being needed around the house- right?

MH: I don't know about your husband but mine can take forever to do certain things around the house. HEHE!!!

we've been adding on to the house for three years. Three and a half years actually. 3 1/2 years. in november it will be four years. I could just say four years at this point. Four years.

Good thing you fixed that. That's a fire hazard. I have a long stick thing with a brush on it, that I stick into the lint trap every week or so, and I guess we probably need to do that on the other side too, by now. Although, our dryer is actually working so I don't know if that's totally necessary but it's good to maintain your stuff.

Keeping the vent is just one of my many handyman talants around the house. For everything else I call the son-in-law or the Long suffering one.

Has anyone had a tub liner installed or had their tub reglazed ? I need to repair my downstairs tub and not sure which way to go. I'm trying to find prices on line but almost everywhere I look I have to have someone come to the house to quote an estimate.
    Any help would be appreciated

My parents had "BathFitter" installed over their new tub. Twice, water has gotten between the old tub and the new bath fitter overlay whatever. The people at BathFitter installed it. I don't know anything about the glazes. My husband's aunt put something in her tub to make it appear newer, but it was a disaster as well. Then again, she did that one herself, so I don't know if she didn't know what she was doing or if it was just the wrong product for her tub or what. New tubs are expensive. I guess the tub part is not so high, it's getting someone to install it (CORRECTLY)!! Even when you pay someone to do something, it seems like some part of the job leaves something to be desired. That, or caulking really is that difficult.

Shalot: I found another web site about tub liners and it stated the same thing you did. After a certain amt of time the seal breaks down and water gets in between the tub and liner. I was also shocked as to how much this can cost. I actually have an appt with bathfitters this week. They are coming to my house and I'll see what they quote and I'll see if they mention anything abt leakage ( my guess is they won't) even if I ask.
Most likely I'll go with reglazing. Thks for your input.

Let me know what you find out or how the reglazing goes just so I'll know for future reference. It's hard to say just by going what my husband's aunt did, since she did it herself. But if you get a someone to do it for you, and it's not too costly and it looks good then by all means, post an entry on it!!
