Cynar, who was now on his elbows and knees, whimpered at the unexpected savior. “Yes, but-”
“And you wouldn't ever force a woman. Would you?”
“Of course not-”
“And you'll calmly get up, apologize to the young lady, and get back to work, right?”
“Yes.” Cynar said as he stood, and by the naked moonlight, her eyes grew wide at the vicious anger she saw in his eyes as he supplied a cool “I apologize, young lady.” he gave her a mocking bow, his eyes never leaving hers. He straightened and said, “Until next time.” and she could see that he meant to see her again. Then he turned and stalked away, towards the main building.
She didn't notice she was still on the ground, her eyes wide open, her mouth agape until her tall, lean hero had bent down and offered a hand. “Are you alright?” his voice softened when he talked to her. His face was shadowed from the moonlight, so she couldn't see his face filled with concern, more likely, she heard it.
“Um, yes. Now I am. Thank you.” She shook her head, and took his hand.
When she was on her feet, she swayed a moment, feeling unsteady. Her hero seemed to see her wavering because he put a supportive arm around her waist. “Are you sure you're okay?”
“Yes I am. I've just had a man almost rape me and I'm perfectly okay.” At that, her hero laughed, a deep rumbling in the chest pressed partially to her back. She tried to look into her hero's face, but once again, his face was shaded from the moonlight, not permitting her to see him.
She felt safe now, with this man who was more a stranger than Cynar.
But she knew the worst of the night was over. “Seriously though, I'm okay. Just a little shaky.”

that's the end of chapter one.... I'll give you a lil' bit of chapter two, but you'll have to come in later to find the rest of it...

Robert Estervauln, the Duke of Doucheré, supported the lady on his arm “So where do you want me to take you, miss?” He said.
“Oh... the stables, I left my mule there when I ran away from Cynar.” she said weakly.
Robert was having a very odd feeling that that voice was familiar. That she was familiar. “What's your name?” inwardly cursed himself, it was none of his business who she was.
The silence that followed surprised him, but before he could speak up, she answered. “I don’t know my name.”
Robert was surprised by her answer. “I-I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked you that, it's none of my business what your name is or who-”
“No seriously, I don't know my name.” she cut him off, “I just remember waking up in the room in there.” and she pointed to the inn.
“So you-”
As they were heading back to the stable, she nearly tripped, and Robert's other hand came to the other side of her waist, keeping her from falling, cutting off what he was about to say.
“Oh, sorry, I tend to trip over my own feet lot,” she said, her brow furrowing in surprise because of what she said, she added “or at least I think I do. I've never actually tripped until now. I have no idea why I just said that.” then she tripped again.
Robert put one hand under her knees, the other went underneath her arms, and he hauled her into his arms.
“Whoa. Um, this is unnecessary. I can walk.”
“Unnecessary?”
“I can walk!” she cried indignantly.
“Yes, but without falling?” he noticed her stubborn jaw set in the soft moonlight. She looked so familiar, sounded so familiar. So why couldn't he place her in his memory? “Jesus! you've got to admit that if I wasn't here, you would be crawling on the ground right now, tired of having to pick yourself up over and over again!” He heard her tiny gasp and saw her eyes flash angrily at him.
His laughter filled the quiet night. She wiggled in his arms. “Put me down!”
“ As you wish.”he said. Though his laughter had receded, his eyes were smiling at her as he set her down.
She walked in front of him, chin raised high, her back ramrod straight. And then she tripped again, and he had her up in his arms again, his laughter starting again. He hadn't laughed like this in years, and yet he found himself laughing easily with a girl-no-lady, a very young lady, in his arms.
She was scowling at him, and his eyes once again were smiling down at her. “Don't worry, miss, we're already here.” He said setting her on her feet.
He was surprised when she looked up at him, and something passed through her features, then a cool, blank mask covered all her feelings. “Thank you.” she said, then turned towards the frenzied mule that was in the back of the barn, a wild glint in its eye as it warily eyed her coming closer.
Robert followed her to her frightened mount, ready to shove her to safety if the mule decided to panic.
The young lady just slowed down, soothing it as she came closer. Then she finally had its nuzzle in her hand, whispering nonsense to it until, finally, the mule was quiet and still.
It was then that she turned, and he staggered back.
