okay...i promised yesterday that if you came back today, you would find more...and here it is
----------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob Calhoun knelt beside the woman that his horse, Midnight, knocked down. 'D*** this weather!' he thought. It was so dark, and so much rain pouring down that he didn't see the woman when he rode in. even now, she was nothing but a shadow-a dark spot on the ground.
“Hello? Can you hear me? Hi, my name is Jacob, can you tell me yours?”
“Ani-...Ani-...”but she didn't finish.
“Annie? Is your name Annie?” but she didn't answer. She stuttered for a moment, and then her head lolled to the side.
“Great!”
He looked up to see her mule standing a few feet away, ears pricked up in alarm both from the storm, and because it didn't see nor feel its leader anymore. Going to it, he soothed it led it back into its stall.
When he came back out, Midnight was nudging Annie. “Aw Midnight, could you just leave the poor lady alone? You've already knocked her unconscious!” Midnight hung his head, as if in regret. He whinnied softly in question. “I cannot tell if you've hurt her out here in the dark, and I can't ask her; she's unconscious!”
Midnight nudged her again, as if she would wake up. “She'll not wake up! You hit her pretty d***ed hard!” Jacob took the reins to his horse, leading it away from Annie, but the horse kept looking back at the lady until Jacob dragged the stallion to his stall, out of sight from her.
The horse neighed loudly, and bit Jacob on his shoulder when he started walking away. Jacob turned around, understanding his stallion more than he thought. “Its okay.” he said, rubbing the stallion's nuzzle. “I'll come and tell you how she's doing when I find out.” Then he walked out of the stables.
Then he picked up Annie, bringing her into The Sly Fox. He ordered a room, and took her straight there, only stopping to ask for a bath to be brought up, ignoring curious glances from the occupants of the pub.
When the bath came, he stripped her of her clothes and put her in it.
If his wife ever found out he gave another woman a bath, he would be sleeping in the servant's quarters for a full month. If she ever heard he even undressed another woman besides her, no matter the circumstances, he would not hear the end of it from her.
Finally finished giving her a bath and dressing her in clean, dry clothes, he laid her on the only bed in the tiny, yet tidy room. He checked her head, but to his amazement, he found nothing but a big lump a little bigger than his fist. Well at least there wasn't any blood, and he was sure she would heal in due time. He brushed her hair out until crackled and shined and laid out around her to dry.
Jacob took to the chair by the bed, and stared at Annie. What was she doing out in a storm like that? And why had she planned to ride out in this weather? To where? And for what reason was she in such a place as this?
She could be no more than twenty-two years old, and such a beauty. Did she have a husband looking for her? A lover? Anyone? Why was she alone? Surly she had had a companion, for a girl with her beauties should not be alone. She was fair, yes. With her dark complexion, she looked like an Egyptian princess, her dark-brown hair, waist-length, was a dark cloud around her, still damp from her bath.
Dear God if he wasn't married!
But he had a wife who loved him, not to mention his three-year-old son... and yet he was found away from home, more often than not.
He should be at home right now... tucking his son into bed with his wife by his side. What would his father say to this? “You are creating a scandal, Jacob! People all over Lockingdrall are thinking that you are away from home to run to another's bed! And here I find you undressing an unconscious girl! Do you know what this is doing- not only to Marica-but to me also?-” It was like his father to think of himself.
He made himself promise that after he took care of this girl that he would go home and spend as much time as possible with Marica. This girl reminded him of Marica, of his dear wife who he knew could be a tiger sometimes, but could easily become a kitten just as fast. God how she could entice him more than he thought was possible.
The truth, he told himself, is that I miss my hellcat and wanna come home....
Jacob stood up and decided to risk getting wet to pay a visit to the stables to tell Midnight their very fortunate news.
When he reached the stables, Midnight was waiting in a restive skittish for him. As soon as he spotted Jacob, he reared and neighed loudly, as if to say, “Where the h*** have you been!”
In response, Jacob said, “You impatient horse! Why don't you try to give an unconscious lady a bath?” Midnight grunted in understanding. Then he perked up his ears as if to tell him, “I'm listening.”
“She's all right,” Midnight seemed to have sighed with relief. “Although I think you've left her with a souvenir for her to remember you for. There's a bump the size if a pomegranate on the back of her head.” Midnight's head sunk with guilt, then he whinnied as if to say, “I didn't mean to!”
“I know you didn't mean to, and half the fault falls on me.” Jacob said, rubbing Midnight's nuzzle. “Get some rest, she's all right, and I want to ride out fresh for Lockingdrall. I believe she'll be healed in no time.”
to be continued...
