Anybody see this story? I found it both hilarious and puzzling.
Japanese woman caught living in man's closet

A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.

Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.

The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.

One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.

"We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."

The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.

She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

How is this possible? It says she lived in this closet for a year. Is this man living in the real world? How can someone hide in your house, use your bathroom, shower, eat out of your refrigerator and not know she's there? I know I'm not the most alert person, but I can't imagine not seeing or hearing her. Does he not even open that closet? He only became suspicious when food was disappearing. He had to go to the length of buying cameras and secretly monitoring his house. How about just listening. This would actually make a really good short story, but no one would believe it. Truth really is stranger than fiction.

So I ask, could someone live in your closet for a year without you knowing?

That is so funny and creepy too. Sometimes little noises are dismissed as the settling of houses or the wind. Actually, someone could probably hide out in my basement cause I usually just rush down to the laundry and back up. Oh my gosh! And to think sometimes I do it in the buff!...Thanks a lot Virgil...now every noise I hear....LOL

I could imagine that happening for a couple of months, but an entire year? It couldn't happen in my house since my mom checks up on every unusual noise she hears. That and my sisters loves playing hide and seek (besides, they make too much noise for anyone to live peacefully) .

Oh thats hilarious. My guess is that perhaps he was always very busy and didn't spend much time at home?. As for someone living in my closet for a year, they probably could if they could find some way to FIT in there!! . I'd probably never find them in there if they decided to hide in all the clothes on the floor in there! Or maybe I would, I like to sit in there sometimes, when I'm on the phone and I'm paranoid that people can hear me outside! . Thanks for posting that!!

Maybe this was a single man who didn’t use that closet. Then she would have free run of the house during the time he was at work and just lay low the rest of the time. I bet weekends were rough. I wonder where she got the mattress or how big the closet was to fit one. No one could live in my closet unless they cleaned it up first, but you could probably hide in there for a time. I have a big junky closet.

Wow, now that's something! I am going to check the closets now! It's as if the tale of the monster in the closet became reality!

Yeah that's what I was thinking. All I kept thinking is of the Santana song, "Put Your Lights On," the one with the lyrics
    Hey now, all you children
    Leave your lights on,
you better leave your lights on
Cause there's a monster living under my bed
    Whispering in my ear
There's an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I've got nothing to fear
Here's a video of the song: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Put...p=mss&ei=UTF-8. That's such a great song from a great album!

it really does sound like it would make a good short story. or it would make a good urban legend type tale, except instead of just a regular woman, there would have to be something gross about her . . . sorry, I've been thinking a lot about urban legends because I had a reasonably sustained conversation with my students about them in my world myth class.

a short story from the woman's perspective would be pretty interesting, too.

I feel like I'd probably notice, but who knows. I could imagine it happening in a really large house or mansion, though.

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was the movie "The Grudge" lol..don't ask! But yeah, it's weird. Like you said, doesn't he ever just open the closet? I mean, it's a closet! And nobody could ever live in MY closet, they won't fit in it LOL.

I've never seen, actually never heard of The Grudge. I was just re-reading the article and it says she was in a shelf on the top of the closet. Good thing the shelf was strong enough to hold her.

Maybe the crawlspace or the attic space --closets here in the house are pathrtically small. Got to hand it to her for cleaning up after herself. I would notice if my books got moved around however. Caught my son that way once. All he had to do was ask!!

Upon first reading, I thought, "wow, how crazy, how absurd. How could someone be dwelling in your own home undetected?" But when I read what Antiquarian had to say, well that made sense. If you are not there most of the time, a year could go by (maybe??) and someone living stealth could get away with it. Then again, maybe not. Anyhow, thanks for this interesting story, Virgil.

Did she see Chase Crawford in there by chance? Cos I'm pretty sure he's in the closet - the question is whose closet.....As to your question Virg, I suppose if I was a vegetable who drooled on herself and needed someone to wipe her butt, it would be possible for someone to live in my closet without me knowing it, but given that I am a sentient human....I have to believe this story is made-up or meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

Haha, Countess. It is from the Associated Press. I usually don't put faith in most news articles. The few things that I have been involved with that have made the newspapers all have had glaring inaccuracies in them. I think all news related stories must have inaccuracies. So it is in the realm of questionable. I wondeer what exactly is true here. Anti below has filled in life in Japan that would put this into a context that would jive with reality. Otherwise one can't even begin to imagine how this is real.

Virgil, seems I can post in here - so everything is A-OK; but I did not yet read the article, so I can't comment. It is late now; I will read it on Sunday; might not be around on here tomorrow too much. Have a nice trip!
