Flea Market

Are there any flea market junkies out there ?

There's a place where I live that holds flea markets during the spring/summer months. My parents and I used to sell stuff there on a regular basis but over the last few years the merchandise has changed as well as the vendors so we stopped.

My father used to make stained glass pieces , magnets and mirrored frames ( my parents would go to garage sales, etc and buy pictures just for the frames), my mother made crafts and they would also sell odds and ends. My father was good at getting people to buy and my mother was good at spending the money my father made.

Since today is a sunny day, I decided to take a drive over to see if there is anything I can find. As soon as I got to the entrance I could tell that it was going to be a dud but I paid my $2 to get in. All the entrance fees go towards this historical society we have where I live.

I started walking up and down the aisles and I was quite disappointed. People were selling more new stuff ( jewelery, bags, silk flowers) rather than old/used merchandise and craftsy things.

I wasn't looking for anything in particular. Lord knows I 've bought so much silk flowers and crafts over the years, I have no room for more. I did manage one time to pick up a nice bookcase. It was a small one and it sits in my husbands den. It was nicely made and I paid something like $20 I think.

So if there is anyone out there that is a flea market junkie like me, what things do you like to look for ?

I really enjoy going to garage sales and things like that, but I'm not looking for anything in particular, or maybe books. There were books for kids I loved when I was a kid and I still love them but they don't exist anymore, but I can find old ones in those sales. Apart from that I just like wandering there and look at things.

I haven't done anything like this in years. It's hard to do with small kids and I'm out numbered. I look forward to doing this again someday

I'm always fascinated by flea markets and garage sales and things like that, I like going to them when I can. Not often do I have something in mind, but like there's one place around that has some awesome antiques; I always like older, interesting, things, like things that have a history attached to them - whether I know the history or not!

the last time I went to a flea market, it was horrible. there was a bunch of overpriced junk for sale. There was one interesting piece of furniture, but it was junky - they had just painted it up and added some hardware and had the nerve to charge $350 for it. Now, if someone artist had hand-painted mural across it or some intricate pattern, I could almost justify it, but this paint job was not original. As for the other booths, stinky candles (honestly, who isn't making and selling candles now?) and handmade purses that were hideous. Maybe there was some interesting stuff, but I didn't see it. Maybe there was some man stuff for sale that was good, like knives or something. But I didn't check out those booths.

Frankly I think most flea markets are just place to unload junk. I can't remember finding anything worth while at one.

We don't really have flea markets, but garage sales are big on Saturdays and Sundays in our summer months. I think that Virgil and my hubby are on the same wavelength, because when my hubby sees the signs for "GARAGE SALE", he always quips that 'they forgot the B' (as in the B in Garage, if ya get the point, lol). Anyway, I have found some pretty good deals on books in the past (including music books).

My husband is the garage sale shopper at my ho use. He’s great! He’s good at finding crap than I need. Last summer I told him I wanted several old screen doors for the garden, and that week he came home with six of them and they were free. He also brought me brand new harvest gold pressure canner that was $7 that day. Now I’m looking for several shower doors and a small TV with a build in VCR or DVD player. I wish I had a list of all of the great treasures he’s found for me. Also he has a friend that goes to some market and they have chickens there!
