I Love The Duck Pond!

Rate this Entry
Well now that the Duck Pond has been turned back over to the ducks after a wonderful winter of ice skating on it, there is tons of activity there.

The mallard ducks are all swimming in twos -- the colourful green-headed male with the tawny smaller female. It is so cute -- every duck has a partner. And soon they will have sweet fuzzy babies to gaze for hours at.

As well, there are a few families of the Canada Goose settling at this pond, too. Some years there are more geese at the pond than ducks, but not this year.

Anyhow, what I wanted to say was that I saw such a sweet sight there this evening, leaving my heart very warmed and my spirits uplifted. It was drizzling rain, and the sun had long sunk behind the prairie grasses. My friend, Billy, and I decided to take a drive to the Duck Pond to catch sight of the goslings that have recently hatched from the Canada Goose families. (We're still awaiting the mallard babies, but I already said that).

Anyhow, several pairs of mallards were quietly swimming in the pond, and it looked so peaceful. They did not mind at all the drizzle of rain, but rather enjoyed it. It is fun to watch how the couples swim silently together, the male so protective of the female.

BUT: near the fence (that keeps the ducks/geese safe from people who want to get closer looks) was one family of Canada Geese. The mother had her wing wrapped around her little babies, and I spied one little furry head peeping out from under that protective wing. The father stood guard, eyeing Billy and I very closely, lest one of us gets any wise ideas. They silently just sat there, even the babies were quiet (you can usually hear them softly peep-peep-peep, OMG it is too cute).

It was quite a job for the mother to keep her wing snuggled around those little ones, it was evident that she had quite a few under there. Of course I could not see how many there were, but there are usually six to eight babies with each new mother; so we can assume that six to eight little fuzzy goslings were tucked in for the duration of the chilly drizzle.

... ... ...

I guess I'm rambling, but this really nice feeling wrapped around me, just looking at that little family. I wished I could have gotten my own pictures, but it was dark, drizzling and so I used a few I found on Google Search.

I love nature. But then you knew that.

p.s. I am humbled

p.p.s. The Billy mentioned is the same Billy as always -- my bestest of best friends. Billy's her nickname, and it totally suits her, kinda like Kizzo suits me in real life and here -- well, at least I think so.

Dear Kiz, you are a true kindred spirit of mine. I work nights offshore, so when I am on land and I cannot sleep, I go to the park. I pick up the garbage, and then sit amazed at the ducks. A man told me that this year is very unique in that there are several more chicks than the last several years. I do believe, that the water quality has improved because myself and many others are cleaning up the trash. I love this entry honey, (Don't let hubby get mad just because I know how sweet you are). Thanks for sharing, and long live the animals, even after the stupid humans are gone. Peace, B

This is such a lovely entry!! . It sounded like it would have been so nice to just watch the goings on at the duck pond! The photos are absolutely gorgeous, even though they aren't your own, little baby ducks are so cute!!

Duckies! I was out on the water recently when I saw a about 5 ducklings swimming without a mother duck anywhere in sight until I noticed her on the bow of a small ship that was moored there, just relaxing and watching the little duckies learning to swim.

My daddy always used to take me to feed the ducks. My mom would save bread all week. Thanks for stirring that memory.

cute pictures. There are several parks near me. I should take a drive there one day to see all the ducks swimming around in the lake.
I really need to learn how to download my pictures from my camera. You've just given me some more incentive.
I find nothing more relaxing then watching animals go about their day. Not a care in the world

Hey thanks to all for reading and commenting (PeterL, I guess it is each to their own) -- but anyhow I wanted to add a couple more things to this entry: For one thing, when the fuzzy babies are allowed to play, they always play in a group with Mother close by with sharp eyes (and very sharp little teeth within a sharp beak). I haven't seen any stray from the six to eight that they were born with -- then again, these fellas are just born. Then, when the Mother wants the little guys to go swim, they form a line -- mom or dad at the start, the little babies (in a straight line behind), and then mom or dad at the end. In nature, it is referred to as a PARADE, and this is no joke. Very very sweet, I have to say. On the pond you will see several parades going on at once (love it love it). And my last addition is that when the eggs are laid and awaiting the hatch, the flying feathers of both male and female Canada Goose are shed, so as to inhibit the leaving of the nest. Wow. The Great Spirit thought of everything!

Nice entry Kizzo. Do you have Canadian Geese up there too? They come down here and make a mess of things, but they are pretty.

We have some geese near a small pond down the street in Fairborn next to a small strip mall where we shop at Krogers grocery and they will often take there time walking across the street. Now the killer ducks in Oakland CA that cahsed me --that's a different story. There wasn't enough food to go around and it's my fault I ran out how---???

Chaney and I were talking today about how nice it would be if we had some geese. They will eat grass and weeds out of a garden and leave the veggies alone (or so I’ve read). We think it would save a lot of work for us! I hope that you can get pictures next time, but the ones you posted are great. I loved this entry! Thanks for sharing the warm fuzzies.
