The man finished his story, and Ol' Spur and the bear Urso were quiet for a while. They walked along in silence for half of an hour before Urso spoke up, "I don't see what this has to do with me and Spur?"The man left the next day, and true to his promise when he looked to the moon he would howl with delight at the thought of the bear he had become friends with.
The man looked at Urso out of the corner of his eye as he continued to watch where he was walking. He replied, "That bear, Bleu the Grizzly, was your father Urso, and the man was me long before you were born. I say it was me, because so many things have happened since then."
Spur sighed a deep breath, and Urso looked from one to the other. They continued to walk along and shortly stopped at a stream to fish. Spur went upstream, the man went downstream, and Urso foraged for berries before wandering after the man. When Urso saw him he was seated by the stream with his shoes off and feet in the water. Urso growled a greeting, and the man smiled. The bear then asked the man to tell him more about his father.
The man replied, "There isn't much more to tell. We were friends once for a short period of time, and then the world changed."
"How did the world change?" Urso asked pleadingly.
The man contemplated how much the bear could understand, and then replied, "Man went into space, Urso. There was a prediction of the end of the world, and many people left the planet for the safety of space."
Urso wrinkled up his brows and sniffed at the wind. "I don't understand this idea... What is space?"
The man shrugged, and told him, Space is where the Moon lives, my friend, up above the tallest mountain."
"Have you been to space?" the big grizzly bear asked with a look of wonder on his face.
