Social Conscience : a sort of rant

I love long titles
Anyway to the topic social responsibility conscience etc.

People we live in a sad sad world, we really really do. I was thinking yesterday as I battled nausea and dizzyness at the train station what would happen if I just collapsed and the sad truth is most people would probably just step over me, rush hour train station big city no one cares. And that is sad. And it made me think a couple of months o I had to take a late slow train that detours via the airport ( really boring) but I got on the train and found my favourite seat ( right at the back/front by the drivers cab- there is so little leg room most people avoide it but it is the warmest most comfortable seat on the train) anyway so I am on the train and this man gets on stowes his suitcase on the overhead rack then gets off- he is with another guy but he keeps wandering on and off the train. Now my mother having lived in London during the IRA scares has us all well trained you sit on public transport and your bag is either in your lap or between your feet never let go, and of course there is my well known tendancy towards parnoia.. . so Im sitting ther thinking oh no oh no what do I do, do I assume this is perfectly innocent or do I make a fuss. And if I make a fuss and it turns out Im wrong I can be fined for wasting time/disrupting the rail service and all that jazz.. and even if it isnt suspious you should NOT be leaving your property unattened for one thing it can be stolen.. so after fretting for 5 minutes and the man not back I come to a decission [I] pull out my phone take a picture of the guy he was with through the train doors and wait I figured if he wasnt back by the time the train started moving Idd kick up a screaming fuss get the train stoped and the bag or me taken off. He came running down the platform and jumped onto the train at the last second just as it was getting ready to move off , so course I delted the pic and forgot about it. but it sad to be so supious.
And then yesterday there was some type of survalliance going on at the train station what other explanation is there for a supposedly blind man filming everyone who is going into the train station very dodgy if you ask me... I mean seriously how bad can they be if I can cotton on to them.

And then there was the time I saw a field on fire from the train.. it was delibrate probably people set fire to field to mprove them or something like that but what I would like to know is what if I see a house on fire from a train, do you ignore it and assume someone else has reported it or do you ring up and go OI there is a house on fire...and who do you ring up. And thats another thing the number for our police station ( long story and 'confidential' so I cant tell it but) we had a scare a couple of months go which led to us trying to find the local police number..quick answer ther isnt one you have to call a city 50 minutes away on a good day on the motorway..can we all say NOT good?

And then ther are just small normal things like if you see someones bag hanging open do you tap them on the shoulder and say excuse me your bag is open... and if someon is passed out on the fllor in a library do you report it to the desk ( turns out they didnt know he was there ut were going to go near him cause he was drunk and smelled funny -not my library this-)

And it all just makes me sad like when I had to walk throughthis rather nasty rascist segrated part of town (and was already earning odd looks for the company I was in) ther was this blind man who had gotten trapped between these advertisment piller things and a bus stop and I wanted to stop and help him but a) my friend dragged me along and b) the guy was massive and upset and muttering/talking to himself in a foriegn langague and yes at least a foot taller than me ( not difficult really considerimng my height) and nasty part of town so I just let her pull me away and that has got tobe one of th nastiest most down right mean and evil things I have evre done but what shocked me more is that other people didnt even see him they just kept walking. Its not right.. but then again you can get yelled at for offering to help people as it can be seen as offensive and patronising so what is the solution? Kill your conscience maybe?

Of course all this proves is the reason I walk into so many lamp posts is that Im too busy watching everything thats going on around me to watch what Im doing, but hey sometimes its really entertaining.

You reminded my of an incedent that happened in Dublin last year. An old Priest who was once the principal of Blackrock college, took a heart attack at Pearse st station around rush hour. It was 15 mins before someone decided to get help. By the time help came he was dead. If people had only helped when they first saw him collapse, something could have been done.

I agree with you, and it seems to be a topic that it's really easy to run yourself in circles over.

Come on, people aren't that cruel. I can't imagine that no one would help if you collapsed.

Nightie, I think you were wise to take that pic for a just-in-case scenario. I don't think that you are over-cautious, I think that you view the world sensibly and any suspicions you have are a result of the way that the world has made us. I liked this entry -- made me think.

Niamh I knew it its not paranoia, he world is going down hill - Virgil I reffer you to Niamh's little historial fact. Becca I knowthere is just no winning this argument. Kiz sweet of you to say but I think it was rather a bit OTT even for me.

Well Niamh doesn't say he was in a populated area. Whatever. I can't speak for far away countries. They say Americans are self centered. Hmm. I do not believe that if someone riding the NYC subway collapses that no one would help. That is outside my boundary of experience.
