Mom Update

Rate this Entry
I take my orders from Anza, so I must blog today.

Let me take the opportunity to give an update on Mom. Urgh, there's been a glitch with with her recovery. Last Teusday she got a blood clot in her leg, was sent over to the hospital, and was in the emergency room all night. I was fianlly told to go home. She was sent upstairs to the floor at 10 am the next morning but was placed in the hall until a room got free. She finally got a room at 5 PM today. Hospital rooms are in short supply in NY. This is common. She was given blood thinners and was given a lung catscan to make sure it didn't travel into her lungs. She had a pain in her lung. She was fairly calm throughout this.

Unfortunately it got worse. The blood clot did traveled to her lung and she got a pulmonary embulism (sp?). Granted it was small. Now she has to be put on cumiden for six months. Cumiden is a pain in the ***. It's a blood thinner and she'll have to check her blood level every week through a blood test. Urrgh.

I blame the rehab place for this. She had been on helprin (sp?), which is a blood thinner and injected every day for people who are non-ambulatory. My mother told me they had not been giving it to her the last three or four days before the blood clot, and and they refused to give her her walker so she could walk around. They forced her to sit in a wheelchair all day and all weekend and the long sitting leads to bloodclots. I am furious. She had this incredible pain in her calf.

So now she has been in the hospital for seven days. They are trying to get her INR (some blood measurement of thinness) to a certain level. Once this reaches the 2-3 zone she can go back to rehab. She was supposed to get to go home on Wednesday, April 2nd, but now this has set her back. They better allow her to stay another week to make up for this. She needs it. She's been trying to do leg exercises in bed or a chair, but that's not the same thing as walking about and climbing stairs. People on cumiden have to be very careful not to cut themselves or bruise because the blood is so thin it will not clot well. My father was on it for a while. I wonder if my mother will be able to do any gardening this year. I'm worried she might bruise herself. She isn't careful about things like that.

Oh the twist and turns of life.

I think she could have a tomato plant on the back porch but I don’t like the idea of more than that. I got really angry reading this! All I could think is ‘You need my Sister!’

poor Mrs Virgil-mum. I hope you can find a different rehab place for her if she has to do rehab again? maybe you can get her a bonsai or one of those tiny desktop rock garden thingies?

Oh Virgil... that is really, really awful about your poor mother. I'm sorry to hear that and I really hope the situation is solved soon, as that's just needless neglect.

    Peace,

This entry makes me so angry at the rehab place your Mother has been in. I know that they can neglect people and do so often. I hope she can get off the cumiden soon. My nephew has been on it for about 8 years and he is a nurse who works doing heart surgery. His goal in life is to get off it. (he had a series of strokes starting when he was 22 and is now 30.) I hope you and your family hold the rehad facility accountable for their neglect. I will keep her in my prayers.

Read this last night in the wee hours but wanted to acknowledge while I wasn't zoning out. Very sorry your mother has not received the treatment she's entitled too. In hope of better times ahead for her.

First thank you all. She's still in the hospital today. They had to do a abdomen sonogram today, for what purpose I have no idea. What's a belly ultrasound got to do with a blood clot? I haven't been able to catch a doctor the last two days. Some check of the spleen is what the nurse said. So she couldn't eat breafest and lunch and when I got to the hospital at 5:30 they had just taken her down for the sonogram. A half hour later they wheel her up and she looks pathetic and angry, lying in a stretcher. She was starving. Lucky her dinner was there and she was so hungry I went down to the cafeteria to get her a hamburger and a hot chocolate on top of dinner. She was finally happier. She even said it herself that she may have to pass on her garden this year. I'm glad she said it first. Anti, I'm not sure the US healthcare is to blame but the laziness of the staff, or perhaps they are afraid of her falling and a lawsuit. I don't know. Sleepy, she only has one more week of rehab left, so I just want to get it over with and get her home. Mom-H, yeah I can use your sister. Granny, I'm so sorry about your nephew. I hope he does well too.

I'm glad she said it first, too. I had an herb garden in my kitchen once- it was easy to reach and care for. there are things she can do to satisfy her love of gardening and it might help prevent depression.

WHAT?! Okay, my mom is a physical therapist and she always says how walking is the best thing to do when you're ill! That is NOT cool! Stupid rehab people! That is RIDICULOUS! Grrr! I am so sorry! Sometimes hospital people can be such morons! I've heard so many stories. Ugh.

Thanks Mom-H, Petrarch and Lily. Actually Lily the physical therapy department is quite good at the rehab place. Quick update. She's discharged from the hospital and back at rehab last night. I need to talk to them.

Oh, good! Well still make sure she moves-that's very important. She's got to do what the doc and the physical therapists tell her to do or she won't get better!

I was truly sorry to read of such things happening in your mother's (and your) life, Virgil! I so hope that things are going much better and that she is being tended to. Your mother is very fortunate to have such a caring son who watches out for her. I just wanted you to know this, Virgil, and that you are a good person. Please take care and know that you and your mother are in my thoughts. - K♥z
