First off let me comment on how many new entries there have been in the last 2 days in the blogging world.
Well, I get into work this morning and abt an hour later the director comes over to me and says we need to talk. My first reaction was "I'm not going to like this am I"? Let me backtrack a little first. I am doing freelance work for my old company. I was asked to come in and help out 3 days a week until they can hire someone for the spot I am now filling. In the last 4 weeks four more people have resigned. One already left, one leaves this Friday and the last 2 leave next Friday. This now leaves the director with a staff of 4 (fully staffed is 11 people). One new person startes the end of April. My old company is in a big hole right now trying too fill these spots. Now back to this morning. I go in and listen to what the director has to say. As she is talking I am looking at her like she has two heads. She tells me her and the President spoke abt the situation last night and decided that the best thing right now is to hire temps that have a financial background to fill in while they try to find permanent satffing. She then proceeds to tell me that the 5 temps are starting today and that I will be the one to train them. So instead of control buying, I will now oversee these temps on a daily basis or at least the days that I am in the office. Mind you this is like 10 minutes before the temps are due to arrive. Perfect timing right ? I didn't even get a chance to say no. I laughed and said you guys are very slick!!.
Based on this new scenario I said we need to talk abt compensation once again. I said my pay shld go up since I am now training and overseeing these 5 temps. I am currently wtg to hear the new offer.
For the most part, these temps seem ok. However I was ready to kick one of them out today because he wasn't listening to what I was telling him to do. He wanted to do something his own way and I said uh uh -listen to what I am telling you. So right now he is on my crap list.
I actually like doing training better than the actual job itself. At least going forward I can put on my resume that I have done consulting work as well as training.
Of course I also have to paint everything a rosy picture because I shouldn't let these people know how bad morale is at the company. If they are that smart, they will figure this out for themselves.

Funny how they can suck you in, isn't it? Hope they offer you what you're worth. Not everyone can train new employees to meet the standards a company requires. At least you enjoy training.

hey, it would be cool if you could train these people and make top notch employees out of them, and turn the morale around!! Lofty goal eh? They wouldn't pay you enough for it would they? you could put that on your resume also...Of course, someplaces are so crappy that it's useless.

Granny5: you got that right, how they can suck you in. The thing is my company thinks just because they have financial background they think these people can do the job. Unfortunately that is not the case. I've seen people with 5+ years experience in the field and come to our company and just not be able to adapt to the environment.

Shalot: The only way to turn around the morale in the company is if the preseident were to say to everyone, don't work late, go home and be with your family. However, this will never happen. She lives for her job and expects everyone else to do the same.

I have noticed over the years new workers come on board and think they have all the answers and why listen to what the company wants. In the old days the workers would learn the system and then slowly move it around to what gets the job done and still be within limits.

I would bring him up short big time or call the temp agency to send another cadaver. Best for the company and actually for him as well though I doubt he would see it that way.

It's funny that you say that. In my 20+ years with the company I can't tell you how many people have come into the company and think they know it all. I know its wrong but at times nothing gives me more pleasure than to tell a person like that, you are doing things wrong - you do not know it all, now go back and do it the way I told you.

I wish I had a job, and knew it all, and was right, and was paid what- no make that more than I'm worth. I'm thinking with things like this 3-4 more weeks may be longer than that.

It's tough being responsible for training people that you had no hand in hiring. And if they don't report to you, it can be difficult to be sure the important details get followed. Because, a lot of times when someone doesn't work out, it can come back on you as their trainer, even though you gave them what they needed.

It's the old: "responsibility without authority" deal -- if they just blow you off, you wind up doing their job too. EEeeegg, corporate politics, I sure do miss that!
